What do I love about Animas High School? So many things! Our daughter is engaged in not only the creative academic style, but with the school community as a whole. The supportive attitude displayed by the students and staff is contagious, giving students the confidence to present their hard work in front of others -- well before a typical student is expected to do this. The school community encourages our daughter to be her own person, to be her own toughest critic and to be her most enthusiastic advocate. We can't wait for the next three years.

All the comments below are now supported by the fact that Animas High School has been selected as a John Irwin School of Excellence! This award honors the top 8% of schools in Colorado, based on students' academic achievement. AHS is one of only 5 high schools on the Western Slope to receive this award. Congrats to the teachers and students!

This is a wonderful school. My son is quiet, bright and shy. He has always been able to disappear in the back of the classroom.. At this school, he is expected to participate and he has become a leader and respected classmate. The students are intellectually challenged and invested in their work. The project based learning model engages the kids and shows them what they are learning is relevant. We feel very lucky that this free, public charter school is on our community.

Animas HIgh School has been the perfect school for my child. Her teachers are passionate about what they teach, and they love working with teenagers. My daughter has made friends there who appreciate her for who she is, not for what clothes she wears. The students care about their work and how the interact with their peers and the adults in their lives. Intellectually, my daughter is challenged at her level, given complementary readings and other assignments. Parents are encouraged to be involved at the school, from volunteering their time and talents, to participating in student-led conferences, to providing feedback at student project exhibitions. Teachers there have won Colorado teaching awards and been presenters at national conferences. It is a wonderful school for students interested in attending college, because its curriculum prepares students to do the critical thinking, writing, and analysis necessary for college success.
