This school has pros and cons. This is surprisingly a really diverse school (nothing is wrong with that) and has some very good clubs and activities. Aside from its pros like every school, it has its lists of cons. One thing the school can really improve on is their punishments, they use a system called an “RP” to punish bad kids (which makes you miss either lunch or recess) Which does not really give the students a harsh punishment because the same kids keep getting them over and over again. I suggest that instead of the “RP” system they make the students do something more affective like clean the school kitchen, or help clean the classrooms instead of recess. Another problem I would like to note is the dating, lots of kids in this school make out and have secret social media accounts which ship students with each other. The school also needs a better job of teaching the kids respect and discipline, I am constantly hearing about fights in this school and kids cussing in the hallways. I also am constantly encountering groups of disrespectful girls that laugh at me and talk about me behind my back. The school will probably not listen to this feedback but I will update this review if they consider it.

Over all my middle schooler is happy at DSST CG. He complains about the rules, but they are there for a reason and part of that is just the age. The general vibe of the students is a little rowdy at times but not harmful. I do wish they had some level of creative electives, basically they have core classes, a tiny bit of computers and music, that is it. They do a great job responding to students that need extra help but those that are average or above average don't have to try very hard and aren't challenged.

Terrible experience at this school. Principal, Dean along with teachers don't care about bullying and every day is worse and worse. DSST claims the best in education but we realized that the most unhelpful teachers my son had are in DSST. Children with disabilities are more affected since the IEP coordinator is a mess not keeping meetings and services for the students organized and up to date. My son now attends a different school and we are still dealing with the mess DSST created in my son's life.

The morale at the school has gone down hill for both teachers and students per the past 2 years. High teacher turn over is the norm lately even mid year. More admin than you would typically find at other schools but they are still ineffective and do not do much to support parent involvement. The classrooms are hit and miss with distractions. The problem behaviors get more attention and it makes learning difficult. Communication and information regarding upcoming events and important dates is minimal to non existent. No extra Science or a Tech going on here than your average school. Many promises with little follow up. Parents are talking and the word is out. Neighborhood kids no longer choosing this school. Most students are from other surrounding areas. They need a new Principal and a renewed focus.

We are consistently impressed by the effort, care, and support of the teachers, leadership, and supporting staff. After two years, so far, our child has continued to have a love of learning and is developing strong community skills. I highly recommend this school.

So far we are impressed by this school. The academic standards are higher than most middle schools. Classes run 8AM-4PM most days. Hard work, honesty and doing your best is encouraged and rewarded. Bad behavior is not tolerated. The classrooms are well controlled by the teachers so that learning can take place without distractions. If you are tired of overcrowded chaotic classrooms and want your child to attend a well run school in a system with 100% college acceptance, this is the school for you. DSST will not be a good fit for children who need a very flexible accommodating or unstructured environment. There are a lot of exams, but that experience can help your child overcome test anxiety before high school and college when those exams really count.
