My daughter was so excited to start kindergarten here. At the time she was a happy, bright, just-turned-five-year-old who loved books and left at the top of her class in 4K. A few weeks into the school year she came home crying and saying that she didn't want to go back. She liked her teacher but was overwhelmed by nightly homework sheets and reading assignments. Our evenings became torture sessions. Eventually, she would cry at the mere suggestion of reading a book together. When I raised my concerns with the teacher at the first conference she said my daughter was lovely, and was just barely behind in reading. There was really no reason to be alarmed, she was one of the younger students in the class of five and six-year-olds and would probably grow out of it. First grade was much the same, although she had a teacher who was very communicative and didn't believe in homework. My daughter faired much better emotionally, although she was still falling behind in reading and refused to write at all. She was forced to go to summer school which did not help. I shared my concerns again at conferences and was told she would probably grow out of it. My daughter is now in third grade, and she makes some very slow progress, but I work with her daily at home. Her self-esteem is terrible now after two years of feeling like a failure. My concerns are still going largely unheard. I have had enough I am paying to put her through a specialized course at home to try to help her catch up. This does not address her needs within the school though. My son starts kindergarten this fall. He will start at Hemlock, but if we have the same issues I plan to pull them both next year with a move out of the district or school choice.

Both my children currently attend this school. Everyone said how great this school was and it took me too long to figure out it is not. My daughter cried everyday when she was in kindergarten. I just figured it was a transitional thing. She became very anxious and nervous about school, tests, reading, lunch anything, she still is but has learned to cope with it better. My son now is experiencing the same anxiousness and sadness that she did. He hates school cries all the time and snuggles everyday learning. Another reason I am rating this school so low is because if you child is struggling they can only get help during the school year if they are the worst of the worst. My son scored at grade level or a tiny bit below grade level on his standardize tests. His teacher explained to me that he may not qualify for help, even though he was struggling and frustrated. So they won't help him during the school year but then offer a summer program for him to take. Part of me think its just a thing kids go through but when I talk to other parents with kids at another school they don't have any of these problems. Friends and family members go to this school too and many have the same problems. I am looking at private schools because I can not stand to see my children suffer and hate going to school everyday. Something has to be going on at that school to not make elementary school a fun learning environment.
