Attending Davis School for Independent Study (DSIS) was one of the best academic decisions I ever made. The flexibility, individualized support, and encouraging environment made all the difference in my education, allowing me to thrive in ways I never could in a traditional school setting. One of the standout aspects of DSIS is the teachers. They genuinely care about their students—not just academically, but personally. My teachers took the time to understand my learning style, provided one-on-one guidance, and ensured I had the resources to succeed. The small student-teacher ratio allowed for a much more personal connection, making it easy to ask questions and get the help I needed without feeling rushed or overlooked. The independent study model gave me the freedom to work at my own pace while still staying on track with my coursework. This was incredibly beneficial, as it allowed me to balance my education with other passions and responsibilities. The structure at DSIS is designed to encourage self-discipline and time management, skills that have been invaluable to me even after graduating. Another thing I loved was the supportive community. Despite being an independent study program, there were still plenty of opportunities to connect with other students through group activities, enrichment classes, and school events. It never felt isolating; instead, it felt like I was part of a small, close-knit group where everyone was rooting for each other’s success. Overall, DSIS provided me with an education that was tailored to my needs, challenged me academically, and prepared me for my future. I’m incredibly grateful for my time there and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a flexible, high-quality learning experience!

We found DSIS amazing with several options to fit different needs. After a lot of discussion and help from counselors and Ms Truesdale, we chose Virtual Academy Split-Site, which was a fantastic option for our self-directed child in 7th, 8th and 9th grades. If our kid had any problems with DSIS curriculum, then their homeroom teacher, or counselor, or primary teacher for the class, was always available for guidance. Everyone was wonderfully supportive. The instructors that put together courses in EdGenuity did a phenomenal job -- it was easy to follow and actually fun to listen to since those online classes were recorded by teachers who were enthusiastic about their topics. All the lectures were simple, broken up, the notes were completely typed out so you wouldn't (couldn't) miss anything, and you could also still capture your own notes in the tool. By 10th grade, our child seamlessly transitioned full-time to Davis Sr High School, registered for 3 Honors classes and doing well - engaged in sports and student life. The biggest reason that we transitioned fully to Davis Sr High School by 10th grade was for more options in Honors and AP classes, and more electives in STEM classes. We are very grateful for all the teachers and leadership team at DSIS.

DSIS is a hidden gem in the Davis Unified School District. Our son who has been diagnosed with ADHD, slow processing speed, and dyslexia but has a high intellectual ability went there from 7th grade, when we moved to town, until graduation. He was comfortable there and never felt bullied by anyone. He liked all of his teachers and felt that they understood him well. Because of his learning differences, he did not learn to read or write until he was in third grade. He is currently getting a BA in Creative Writing. He attributes this love of writing to his English teachers at DSIS. I did not give it five stars because, unfortunately, through no fault of theirs, the school only had one school counselor to cover K-12 which stretched her too thin and some things fell through. But he graduated and is doing well which is all that matters!

I experienced DSIS through their K-8 split site homeschool program during my daughter's 7th/8th grade year. She was able to take some classes on campus the rest at home in homeschool. It was the perfect balance for her and I am so grateful that it was an option. Every staff member I met at DSIS was knowledgeable and supportive.

Our experience was horrible. Sadly the new principal, Siobhan Truesdale, is not a professional leader. When she started the 2023-2024 school year 6 great teachers left because of her. The current teachers do not want to help or teach the students. They use a program called EdGenuity to teach their students and do not provide any guidance or support to the students.

This gives kids who may not do so well in a traditional school setting have the best chance at a great education
