Two of my daughters graduated from Vaughn Occupational High School. My eldest has Cerebral Palsy and an Intellectual Disability. My youngest has Autism. Vaughn, in my estimation, is a hidden gem in the CPS district.Some of the most important skills my eldest learned include knowing her way around the kitchen and having an interest in food preparation. Not less than a month ago she remarked on having learned an important safety skill from Mr. Murray, the Culinary Arts teacher. She learned so much about both classical and contemporary artists from the Art Teacher; she recognizes the sounds of most of the instruments in an orchestra, thanks to Mr. Green-one of the National Board Certified Teachers in the school; her knowledge of Ethnic Studies, US History and Chicago History show a well-rounded education; and she fondly remembers her Freshman Occupational Teacher, Ms. Tyska, who taught her how to explain to a prospective employer what her strengths and weaknesses are in order to be a team member on a job.For two years in a row, she was able to take the After Schools Matter program that offered job placement with the Chicago Park District Summer Camp. This opportunity allowed her to get both the hard and soft skills needed to get and retain a job. In her last year at school, there was a partnership between Vaughn and Access Living, which also helped her to get employment post graduation. It's so critical for our students to have work experience on their resume.Our youngest daughter had teachers and therapists who were experienced working with students with autism. There were people who knew her abilities and challenged her to get math and reading skills she needed for the rest of her life. I am grateful to Ms. Baylis for teaching my daughter to balance a checkbook and to Ms. Manseau for taking the extra time to figure out job skills based on her interests, to name a few. Also, Ms. Anderson, who was the AP at the time, was so good at understanding our daughter's behavioral issues and was able to offer phenomenal support. It was so reassuring to have someone who spoke "Autism".All of the adults in the school genuinely want to create the safest and most appropriate learning environments for all students. The SECAS are some of the most passionate and hardworking people I know! We keep in touch with the ones who helped our daughters the most, and are truly grateful for having two Vaughn alumnae.

They meet my son where they are at and treat everyone with respect. IEP meetings are professional and efficient.

The school deteriorated since Rusty and Mrs. Fox left. It has deteriorated and become a dumping ground where kids mark time until they age out.

Don’t send your kids to this school it’s not good for a kid
