Hello,I am a current student at BIS in 8th grade. It has been an overall mid experience. Many things have happened during my three years here, they do fun activities occasionally but the kids tend to take them as boring. Fights have happened right outside of classrooms while I was still inside. The fights never last too long as the Principal (who I will speak about later) finds out and stops it. Me or my friends have never been in a fight but me and others especially have gotten close but stopped it before it escalated. The schools current principal (as of 2024) is terrible. He gets dates wrong, does not have schedules ready in time and takes away every fun thing from school. The single, only good thing about him is you can wear Crocs, which is nice I guess. I seriously wish they can get a new principal.Electives may seem fun as you view the tiles, but they are not. Theater seems like a fun, care-free elective where you can act and have fun. I have taken this elective and it is definitely not anything like this. You have little to no time to practice skits and plays but if you rush and get it done, you might have a fun experience. Overall, I do not recommend attending this school. I recommend going to Crocker or Taylor. They are nearby and have much better programs and teachers.Thank you for reading- Anonymous Student

TRUST ME!! I AM A CURRENT STUDENT(8th grader) AT THIS SCHOOL! This is my last year at this school. Personally, everything depends on what kind of teacher you have. Some teachers care about your mental health others don’t, some teachers actually teach, but other, they don’t really teach or explain very well. I would kind of recommend this school because, from the reviews I’ve read, I think it has changed. What you learn at this school is kind of unpredictable, however, I think you do learn what you need, as long as you turn in your homework’s. In my 3 years at this school, only 2 fights actually happened and 1 fight was going to happen during lunch, however the vice principal caught it before it happened. It is kind of a safe environment, however kids do jokingly make fun of others, they don’t actually mean it, but they joke about it a lot. The school welcomes parents like open house, and if you want to help the school, then you can join the PTA.

Teachers are so nice in the begining of the year and they are still so warm hearted

I’m already in my last year at this school and don’t really think it’s that great. First of all, math is unpredictable. You either get a teach who will teach you the steps or a teacher (that I have) just giving you cool downs and a study guide. My teacher doesn’t tell us the steps on a problem, so I had to ask my friend for help. I enjoy having nice- teachers who take their job seriously and test your limits. There’s been so many fights and a lot of bullying seen but not talked about. If I had the chance, on the first day I would switch out of my current math teacher.

My child recently graduated and had a fantastic time. The teachers were attentive and most of the children from our community go to this school making it a great social environment for the kids as they have their friends. It's really hard to understand why others have rated so poorly. I don't doubt that there are issues here and there but let's be honest if you put a thousand adolescent children in a public school setting ( especially at this age) you have to expect things to pop up from time to time.

Not a good experience for our family. Elementary schools in Burlingame are great and the High School is solid but BIS is very hit and miss. A couple of the teachers made an already difficult schooling experience downright miserable for our kids. To be fair, a few of the teachers do their best at BIS, and one Vice Principal stands out as always approachable and helpful.

Overall, it was a great experience to have my child here. Teachers are nurturing and caring and the school carries a lot of burlingame pride.

An embarrassment. The quality of some of the teachers and their academic expectations are pathetic. As a former middle math and science teacher, I am so saddened by the lack of rigor or even writing skills that is being expected of these kids. They are getting by with doing a bare minimum yet passing classes. Not all, but the teachers seem apathetic about their jobs. Parents don’t rock the boat - common statement is “ Just get thru these years”. High school is going to be a rude awakening for these kids. A lot of them will not be prepared.

Academics is below par. The school has been failing our kids over and over again. Unfortunately, it's only getting worse.

Poor. I worked very very hard to purchase a house in Burlingame for the schools --and I have been sorely disappointed.

Burlingame elementary schools are a gem; BIS is a 3 year abyss - just hope your child doesn't leave the school disenchanted, unmotivated...

BIS is a school that has many rude people, and many students are afraid of classmates and even teachers. I believe BIS should be a student-friendly environment, and that people there should be treated with more respect.

BIS is a fabulous school that offers numerous electives, project-based learning, and opportunities for students to grow academically as well as socially. We couldn't be more pleased!

The district really need to re-evaluate what goes on at this school. While the principal is sending out emails about fiestas, vulnerable students are being bullied. Unacceptable.

unchallenging academic curriculum for accelerated students. Leadership not sympathetic to bored and disengaged students due to being under-challenged. Curriculum based on prescribed workbook and web sites. High teaching staff turn-over rate (lost 18 teachers thus far since end of school year 2015-2016). Disruptive students in a classroom are allowed to continue disruption with little consequence, but adversely penalizing all other students in the class for holding up progress. parent-teacher conference is 5 min, only allowed to meet with ONE of the 7 teachers student has and is a joke. Elective choices and non-academic classes seem beneficial. But when a class is taught by "go to this web site and do what the page says..." one has to wonder whether you actually need a teacher or just a proctor.
