We raised 4 children in Beacon and all went to Rombout. It is a decent school, but it is a middle school; the hormones are raging and the students are beginning to break out from their parent-controlled childhoods. I noticed that most reviews are close to 10 years old. Beacon has come a long way in ten years, and Rombout is improving along with Beacon. As another reviewer noted, Beacon is multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-economic status; a lot like the U.S. If your children do well in school, they will do well at Rombout. Shielding them from the various aspects of society is not going to help them, and perhaps, they can benefit those less fortunate than themselves through their interaction (now I'm sounding like a Democrat, and I'm far from that :) ). I bet it would be hard to find a community where the middle school is rated higher than either the elementary or high schools.

This school would be a 9.9 out of 10. It is really that wonderful. The staff is wonderful thing, a lot of the kids are nice there are SO many good things about this school it would take up three pages.

Who is monitoring this school? I am alarmed! My child is in the 6th grade and constantly comes hom telling me of the drug problem in the school. 6th graders getting suspended due to findings of drugs in the bathrooms. I do not feel my child is safe, I do not think anyone really cares at the school, I also feel like the school staff doesn't care for the children. I need to re-locate fast. I am scared for my child's life! Even when I arrive to pick up mu child at the school I am freely let in, allowed to walk down halls. Rombout is the absolute worst school I have ever seen; I say this as I was born and raised in the Bronx. I moved up here for a better life for my children and instead have to always worry about them.

Rombout Middle School has been a much better experience for us than what I have read by other reviewers. My daughter, now an 8th grader, had to get used to all the new kids pouring in from 4 elementary schools, but she has adjusted admirably. She has pretty much stuck to the group of friends she made in elementary school...all honors students. We are glad we were not frightened off by a multi-cultural public school with many disadvantaged children. Its good for her to know that not everyone is as fortunate as she is, that life is a struggle for many and she is learning to appreciate the friends, families and neighborhoods which make Beacon so interesting and inspiring. We have been very pleased with the teachers/staff overall, they are passionate and creative even within the confines of the current testing mania. It has been hard to see Principals come and go..but that seems to be an issue in many towns. Do not be scared into sending your child to an over-priced private school...give the public schools a try, you won't be disappointed and you are paying for it anyway. There is more to our school than meets the eye and many caring, supportive people.
