If your child is disabled or mentally ill, I would advise against sending them here. The staff care more about controlling and harassing students than providing support, and accommodations for students who's struggle comes from something they cannot control. As for safety, there's fights constantly... Nothing has been done about any of the issues going on.

As a former student of West High, I must caution any parent wishing to send their children here especially if your child has special needs of any kind.the staff is lazy and cares more about browbeating students and keeping them under their thumb than they do about actually teaching or fostering a creative educational environment. the school til this day has daily fights and violence and at least two students died in my four years attending west. one from gang violence and another from a staff infection brought on from the schools lack of cleanliness. Bullying is rampant and nothing is done about it. any complaints from parents are met with a dismissive attitude. if you want your student to succeed you will find yourself spending a lot of time in the office and talking to staff cause they do not do their jobs and are at times very cruel and uncaring of children and what may be going on in their home life.I once heard a P.E teacher tell a young woman who was having severe mental cramps that he did care if she was bleeding from every orifice in her body, she was gonna run the mile. she did and then promptly passed out from pain and had to be taken to the hospital and this was only ONE incident with a teacher. the special education staff is mostly undertrained and a lot of them are borderline antagonistic towards their students. I implore any parent considering High Schools in Bakersfield to look elsewhere, even if you must do a cross-district transfer. West high is not the school for your children.

My experience and my child experience was the worst. She never could get in contact with her counselor, Maria Riveria, because she was always busy. My daughter had to be her own counselor which is sad. I recommend future parents and students to do your research before enrolling your life at this school. The staff is very unorganized while you are standing there asking for assistance. I have more children and rather home school them or intradistrict transfer them before I let them step a foot on their premises. It was the most horrible experience that we both had to go through and I do not wish this on my worst enemies. If you care about your child education, state of mind or safety, I am a live witness to say that this is not the school for you. RESEARCH!!! I WISH I HAD DID IT!!!

My child got jumped by a group of students of a different ethnicity on his first day of school. I never felt my child was safe st West High School. Every time I entered the deans office there was other students that were there for fighting. It seems bullying is very common and no one does anything about it. I'm glad I moved from the area.

With the first quarter closing I still feel West High is a great school. My grandchild loves it telling me she loves it because of the great teachers, the diversity of students and the overall feeling of success.
