As a student, I have always attended Antonito and I believe that my education level is higher than some students in Colorado. Education is the main goal in any school, especially in Antonito High School. We may not have everything that other schools have, but we have very intelligent teachers that care for the students. Teachers care that we learn. I believe that it is the student's choice whether they want to increase the knowledge they have or not. Many extracurricular activities are offered for us, if our grades are high enough to participate. I have spoken to students from around the San Luis Valley and found that this year, they are taking some of the classes that I have already completed!

As a student who graduated from this school, I found the education poor at best. Students were often encouraged to take easier courses, and not learn material. I personally know about half the students who go on to college, often have to take remedial college courses. There are probably less than 200 students in the entire school. The school should be shut down and transfer its students to better schools. The area is all about having community pride and family ties. However, there is too much of an emphasis on nepotism and resistance for change. These qualities paired with parents undermining faculty and staff causes the students to get praised for mediocre performance. Mediocrity is a common among students. I would never send my children to this school. It is surprising that other students do not feel cheated for a decent education. People may have low expectations for the students because the school is underfunded. There is not a lot of violence in the school, but many substance abuse incidents arise. There is a lack of discipline and a strong Catholic influence within the school. This school invites abstinence speakers for sexual education. The teen pregnancy rates are high.
