Truly exceptional. Our son is thriving academically and socially. The teachers and staff are dedicated and caring. Standout choice for families seeking an outstanding boarding school experience for their student.

A Beacon of Hope and Excellence: Our Experience at Maplebrook SchoolNavigating the world of special needs education can be daunting, but discovering Maplebrook School has been a transformative experience for our family. From the moment we drove up to the campus, it was clear that this school is a beacon of hope and excellence in special needs education. Being a Social Worker and have worked in schools in the past I can tell you from both a professional in the field and as a parent this is a great school. They service a population that is usually overlooked and is very hard to find appropriate schools for.The school’s commitment to individualized care is remarkable. Each child is recognized as a unique individual, with personalized learning plans tailored to their specific needs and strengths. The educators and staff are not only highly skilled but also deeply compassionate. They take the time to understand each student’s abilities and challenges, fostering an environment where every child can thrive. The facilities are top-notch, they have everything a large Boarding School has, but the feel of a small school. The learning spaces are vibrant and welcoming, promoting both academic and social development. The school also offers a range of extracurricular activities that are thoughtfully adapted to ensure every student can participate and enjoy. One of the most impressive aspects of the Maplebrook School is its emphasis on communication and collaboration with families. Regular updates and open lines of communication ensure that we are always informed and involved in our daughter’s progress and development. The dedication of the staff to not just our child but our entire family has been truly heartwarming. The positive changes we’ve seen in our daughter since she started at Maplebrook School are nothing short of extraordinary. She is more confident, more engaged, and more excited about learning. The supportive and nurturing environment has made a profound difference in her life, and for that, we are incredibly grateful. We couldn’t be happier with our decision to enroll our daughter here, and we wholeheartedly recommend it to any family seeking a nurturing, empowering, and enriching educational experience for their child.

Such a lovely campus! Parents are fantastic. However, this institution does not effectively inter-or intra-communicate with family. If your student does not fit into the bubble, it won’t be successful, despite the mission statement.

This is our son, Max’s, 2nd year at Maplebrook and he’s in 10th grade. Max’s social, life and executive functioning skills have improved tremendously since attending Maplebrook. He is more mature, confident, responsible, independent and socially appropriate. He also seems to understand and actively practices perspective taking when it comes to conversations and relationships. Once Max understood it, the RISE (Responsibility Increases Self Esteem) behavior program truly resonated with him, and he was very motivated to earn points and move up levels. The staff helps us to carry over “RISE at Home” goals when Max is home for school breaks. Their support has been invaluable in maintaining Max’s progress and preventing regression. Max loves the small classes, interesting electives, amazing recreational activities and living in a dorm with friends. He always tells us, “I’m never bored at school. There is always someone to hang out with and something to do.”The dorm staff works closely with the students to learn life skills and dorm chores. They and Max’s staff Mentor are truly partners in parenting for us and we speak/strategize with them regularly. The fact that most of the staff lives in apartments within the dorms helps them truly get to know and understand each student. We intend for Max to stay through Maplebrook’s 18-21 program, because we have seen how it prepares students for independent living (adulting that even our neurotypical son would benefit from!) and vocational success.

The school lacks proper leadership. The quality of education is very poor. Few if any staff/faculty are licensed to teach in NYS. Administration lacks leadership skills and communication skills. I do not recommend this school!

Class size is small and academics are altered to individual need. Campus is beautiful.

Our child has been part of the Maplebrook School community for the past 4 years in the post secondary program called ICCS. We've had a very positive experience overall and see the immense progress in our child. The school offers different paths depending on what's best for the student; academics and work experience, online certification programs in the job field of interest, and/or attending the local community college. The peaceful setting in a rural area is calming for the students especially those with anxiety and that worked well for us. Enrollment dipped a bit during covid lockdown but now seems to be growing quite a bit over the past 8 months or so. Students come from all over the country and even internationally so kids learn about diversity.

Our child attended the Maplebrook School for 2.5 years. There was so much staff turnover which lead to much inconsistency for our children. We anticipated some turnaround when the New Head of School was appointed , but years later, staff continue to come and go. As a result, the quality of support, services and education was negatively effected. Enrollment has suffered, students are leaving mid-year and children with severe behavioral concerns are being admitted. Police complaints have been filed against the school as the result of students being bullied, harassed and assaulted. The school never probably addressed these issues or informed families of these incidents. There is no transparency and communication with parents is minimal at best. We removed our child for fear of her safety.

We removed our son (10th grade) in Jan 2021 after he was assaulted by another student in his dorm.1. Uncaring and uncommunicative administrative leadership 2. Weak academic program3. Lots of staff turnover and low morale 4. Six students transferred from the school in one semester alone. 5 teachers and one senior admin left as well. 5. Staff is not trained to work with kids who have OCD, anxiety, or executive functioning issues.6. Maplebrook will say they can assist your child academically but there is no follow through. Ask how they will deal with the particulars of your child’s IEP and get it in writing.

This is our daughter’s 3rd year at The Institute and we’re so pleased with her maturity, independence, and overall growth. We looked at many schools before choosing The Institute. This school seemed more dedicated to the end result of independence and job skills after graduation.

Our experience at this school suggests that the school suffers from serious problems with culture and communication that start with administrative leadership. The primary driver for admission to the program is an open slot. Once admitted, if your child fails to meet their rigid standards the student is dismissed at the end of the semester. Despite sending letters to the members of the Board of Trustees requesting a meeting to discuss our experience we have yet to hear from any board members. What does this lack of communication suggest about the commitment of the school to excellence in learning and exploring the experience of students?
