My children have attended this school from K-5. The staff have been wonderful and my kids have thrived.

Absolutely no help if your child has special needs like SPD or ADD or ADHD. Matter of fact they leave your chilid behind and guilt trip parents into seeing a pediatrician for medication. My child comes home feeling utterly defeated almost everyday. His self esteem is trashed because of the lack of care. My childs OT is very concerned and says I should transfer him ASAP! Even one of the staff working at the therapy office children went to this school and pulled their child out. So sad.

I love walking into the school every morning with my daughter. The staff and students are happy The teachers, principal, and all staff hold each student to a high standard. They know what these kids can accomplish and help them become the student they need to be for the rest of their school career.

My son went to Oak Elementary back in the 70"s, and now his daughter who is going to be a 5th grader has been a student at Oak since kindergarten. I have been fortunate enough to be a library volunteer and getting to interact with the teachers and staff. I admire their determination to get to know every student by name and greet them whenever they meet in hallways or at the beginning and end of each school day. Students are taught respect by example beginning with the principal, followed with teachers and staff. Smiles are a common experience as each child is guided through the academic day. Those needing special attention, rather it be extra assistance with their studies, or a more accelerated learning experience, are given every opportunity to excel. Each child is important and are treated with kindness and patience. Oak is a happy place to spend school days with a great support staff working hand in hand with teachers. It is a solid and positive team.

My son went there from K-5th, in his 5th year my son was bullied on a day to day basis by a new student and the new principal or any of the teachers didn't do anything to protect him so as a parent I put him in a private school and the improvement has been remarkable! I don't regret it at all but the point is the other boy should have had to leave not my son when he grew up in that school.

Principal and staff are rude and unwelcoming of parents at the school. They will call the cops on a parent for walking their child to class. I would not advise any child to go to this school.

We have had children at Oak Elementary since 2004. Every year it improves. We've always felt like our school is awesome. As for immunizations, they do check those, but state allows some time for parents to get them done. So all schools would have this same issue. The teachers and staff care so much about all the kids. They know all of the children even if they aren't in their class. The work together to help each child and we've been so pleased with the success our kids have had here. The neighborhood is one of the nicer areas in SE Albany, aside from a few streets. We feel our children are safe. City wide transfers are hard to come by, they really try to keep kids in the school district they live in. So the comment that most transfer is false. We have over 300 amazing students at Oak Elementary!

This school has gone downhill quite a bit since 2009. Kids are allowed to attend school with improper immunizations because the office lacks to keep track of the ones who need it done. The school is not a good area of town, and the apartments right down the road have gotten worse as well, lots of drugs and "activities" going on. The teachers are slacking with making sure the kids are getting the proper education, simply pushing them through benchmarks when they are simply not ready. There is only one nice neighborhood in the area, and they take their students elsewhere. This school needs serious help.
