We are nearing the end of the 6th grade at Edgewood and did not think I could be more disappointed than I was at the end of the 5th grade. There is absolutely no support for children migrating into the middle school from the elementary school. The transition into a middle school program is huge and very little support is given. They are expected to be organized and sit in classrooms the same as 7th and 8th graders, which is absolutely ridiculous. There is no personalized teaching to help kids who learn differently (not read a book write a paper child) and actually they are punished and dismissed as if their learning is a hassle to have to even teach them. I have reached out numerous times to teachers, counselors, and principals over the last two years with nothing more than my child just needs to try harder. No suggestions on a tutor or ways I can provide more support at home or that the school can provide. It doesn't help that in two years there has been 4 different principals... I don't know what is happening in this school but the board needs to stop turning a blind eye and actually make some changes. The elementary schools are great and over communicate, even the HS communicates and provides additional resources and support for students struggling so I do not understand why it is not the same in the MS. We are currently looking at different options next year, however, switching schools and having a child make new friends at this age can be just as challenging as succeeding academically. If we had the chance to re-do 5th grade and 6th grade we would of definitely open enrolled into a different district.

The councilors don't care about anyone's problems and considering the old principal got caught having s*x during the school day is a bad sign and the food quality is made to be just up to the standard, furthermore, most teachers don't care about the problems you're having. I would not recommend putting your child in this unhealthy learning environment

This is the type of school where kids go from being eager learners to hating school. Days consist of memorizing state testing questions with no room for creativity or fun while doing it. Many teachers are habitually absent so classes are often led by unlicensed subs. Sitting all day with zero movement or peer interaction is the goal and kids who do this are rewarded with more sitting and watching Disney movies over and over again- yes, my 7th grader watched Encanto three times in math class. Middle school can be a positive experience but here it is not. In addition to dull teachers there isn’t much to promote community so preteen kids are left feeling drained, tired of school and lacking belonging in the school community.

Edgewood is not a healthy, positive learning environment for kids. Both of my kids have always attended WCSD. I unenrolled them from Wooster in the fall of 2021. Both were miserable in 5th grade at Edgewood (different years - they aren't twins), and even after 5th grade, my oldest child's needs were being largely ignored. Fifth grade should NOT be a part of the middle school. From what I understand there's almost zero social-emotional learning or support. Teachers expect 5th graders to function like 7th graders. There are also WAY too many kids vs adults at this school. I honestly wonder if all the teachers at Edgewood know all their students' names without looking at their roster. My oldest child struggled so much academically in 5th grade. Finally, I requested a formal learning evaluation, which was denied. I don't recall the school phycologist even meeting my child. She only spoke with his/her teachers, who assured her my child was "at grade level" and could "do the work if he/she really wanted to." The 5th grade ELA teacher made my child cry b/c she was relentless about having my child redo an assignment over and over and over again (her own admission). Maybe since she's had her first baby she's grown more compassionate. My child felt his/her teachers literally hated him/her. I found out during an ambush, I mean a meeting the teachers called with me, they had sent my child to the principal for his/her attitude. Why wasn't I notified the day it happened? So, I sought outside opinions by professionals and a formal evaluation at a pediatric medical facility. A therapist not associated with WCSD informed me that some kids who struggle for a long time eventually develop a negative attitude toward school and their teachers because they feel abandoned and resentful. My child ended up testing "well below grade level/below average" in several areas and was diagnosed with learning disorders. My younger child, who has always loved school, became depressed and emotionally distraught after starting in 5th grade at Edgewood, making comments like, "I hope I die. I wish I was dead." He/She cried regularly on the way to school, begging to please not make him/her go, and cried often at night; I'm talking body shaking sobs while squeezing me tightly. Academically he/she was getting A's and excelling in school, and I highly doubt the teachers noticed anything amiss.

This school does not have a good environment for learning. My son's math teacher, for example, uses math time to teach Bible verses and encourages the kids to pray under the flag pole. She makes frequent disparaging comments about certain children and spends class time on her views on politics and religion. My son believes that she would like him better if we started going to her church. Clearly, this is a school where some teachers have a bully pulpit, and there is not a lot of oversight.

There is not an environment condusive to learning, rather minimal supervision as supposedly cameras watch the 5th graders during recess & learning time. Issues of physical and verbal abuse are rationalized and education is standardized with not much effort put into individual learning.

Edgewood has been pretty good to our family. The principal really cares about the kids-- and believes in family involvement. Communication from the school is pretty inconsistent-- but has been very good by individual teachers and support staff. The PTO is... well... it really isn't even a factor. They don't do anything and have generally been pretty click-ish. The school nurse is on the ball! She takes her job seriously and still manages to show that she cares. Band is very welcoming kids with disabilities. The computer tech teacher has gone above and beyond! My child has found a love for history-- a couple of amazing teachers have sparked that interest. One amazing speech path and a couple of good ones. My child has sensory issues and ceiling fans are an issue... one 'please' to the best custodian EVER and the fan was no longer an issue. Academically my son has gone from hating school and being grossly underestimated at another school to full general education and the merit roll. Edgewood has been good to him.
