I have gone to Hanes all 3 years..Never in my life have I been so excited to leave a place. The cafeteria lunch is always old, the cafeteria itself is old, basically, the whole school is due for a remodel. We had a fundraiser last year where they just ended up using the money for decals for the gym which barely lasted half a school year. The school could benefit from proper budgeting. The school highly favors the HAG program more than anything and don't get me started on the staff. This year more than half of the old staff left and all the new staff has no idea what they're doing. The new assistant principals seem lost half the time as well as the other, very sensitive may I add, staff. Everything about Hanes is unpleasant, and the only reason it's considered a "good school" is because of the very biased HAG program that might seem appealing to new students, but it's not worth going to the school for. Instead of focusing on other issues like vaping in the bathroom and the use of illegal substances students use throughout the school day, they decided to focus on their uniform and dress code system. This should be the least of their problems. There are no jackets allowed in school, even when it's freezing INSIDE, (mind you the school heaters sometimes break which should be added to their main list of issues), They focus on the length of girl's skirts more than anything and they make their MAIN focus on how the students are dressed.Now that we are talking about the main issues, let's talk about the sanitation of the school. The bathrooms barely get cleaned and when they do, it's a sloppy unfinished job, same with the classrooms. No shade to the janitors..they try their best. The bathrooms sometimes don't have soap or toilet paper. Only water... The 8th grade boy's bathroom is almost always flooded which is more of a student behavior problem but still. One time I was sitting in my 7th-grade ELA class and a roach ran by, Near the end of the school year also they had an ant problem in the hallway where ants would crawl out cracks in the wall...gross. The behavior of the students has got to be the worst part of Hanes, they rip apart the bathroom, breaking sinks and soap dispensers. Fights happen very often and over anything and it's just overall very unsafe. I strongly discourage wasting your time at this school, I'm sure their better options out there. If you are looking for a nice, unified, CLEAN, well-behaved school, Hanes is not what you are looking for

Hanes is a great school, except for the perfidious snakes here. I am HAG, and trust me if your child ain’t- they will treat you like beggars… Bathrooms are better for HAG, teachers have brain and they nurture us(applicable to HAG.) However, the administration warms up their seat in main office congratulating themselves for “donating their time and effort.” Plus the other kids get bullied by teachers. Needless to say, hanes is a horrible school filled with helpless kids uncouth and lazy substitutes and narcissistic PTA. Your child will be changed just like myself…

Hanes isn't a perfect school, but some of the reviews on this site are not accurate. I'm a teacher at Hanes. The previous review that claimed HAG students got a field trip to go bowling "just because" is not true. Every time there is an olympics, our school has a STEM olympics. All homerooms compete. Of the homerooms that medaled for Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals, 4 of the 10 (there were ties) were not HAG and the 8th grade gold winners who went on the bowling field trip were not HAG. The student from the previous review was likely a 6th grader, because of the reference to pods, and if that student continues at Hanes, hopefully their continued experience will further bring the schools' better lights into view. The teachers at Hanes are by and large dedicated to helping their students succeed, whether HAG or not. We offer more afterschool activities than any other middle school I know of. We frequently bring in community members to engage with students during the regular course of the day. If you want your student to receive an outstanding STEM education, there's no place better in this area to my knowledge.

As a student here at Hanes Middle School, I don't feel safe. There are problems with fights, bullying, and illegal products. The only people that really benefit are the HAG kids. Most of the regular to AG kids are ignored. We are also basically segregated. The majority of HAG students are white while the other half of Hanes is colored majority. Swearing is also a big issue at this school as well as mask policy. They are mandated to giveus mask breaks but we never do. Parents, please don't ever send you child to this school.

Was here in 6th grade and 8th grade. Not a good school for the teachers i had. only a very small amount of teachers were awesome/good to have At the time of me being there in my experience, i did not see a huge amount of Bullying ( there were times but not an everyday type of thing)It wasn't fun in any way. The uniform wasn't bad... pretty normal.Cafeteria? 2/5 same stuff all the time, Cafeteria employees always seemed like they did not care ( except for 1 person that always smiled) PE was 1 of the 2 things that made school extremely fun, the 2 teachers for PE i had were cool and fun! always nice and did different things every week.2nd thing... ISS( in school suspension) was not bad at all Teacher let us watch YouTube or play games on Chromebooks? and would even give us Takis or let us talk. which meant getting detention not being a bad thing instead it was a way of enjoying a whole day of fun without worrying too much about work. 1 of the best memories in ISS was knowing someone was coming in to the ISS room and having to pretend we were actually doing "Work".Out of all the times i either got ISS or OSS... Parents were rarely notified of issues going on at school. Mostly informed when there was OSS and not ISS.The school wouldn't've been fun in any way if it wasn't for the few teachers that made learning fun or made the bad stuff not seem too bad.i did learn a few things ( mostly when it looked like the teachers actually wanted to teach you) but some other subjects i could not have care less Thanks to the teachers.

Reggie Hunt allowed my daughter to be bullied by teachers and students at this school. I also feel that he bullied her also. As a result, I had to pull my daughter from the school mid year. She is now in another county and her teachers can't understand how certain things were put in my daughter's record because they have never seen any of those behaviors from her. ALL of her teachers, including her Principal and Assistant Principal say that she is well mannered and respectful. I am so glad that I supported my daughter and fought for her because I knew that what was being accused of was out of her character. This school lacks leadership. I am so glad that Lisa Duggins is not there and probably not even with WSFCS because she was as clueless as they come. I will never enroll my daughter back into a WSFCS.

I am a teacher at hanes and let me tell you that if your kid is not in AG or HAG this is a horrible school of them as the ''traditional"kids get treated very very poorly they are all in one Pod with nasty bathrooms. The kids in ag and hag get all the newest and best supplys and the best teacher with the best rooms and the regular kids are looked down on and get the worst rooms and they get no computers in their room but the ag kids do my son has notice too they don't even get a change to get into ag. It's like segregation but with the abilities if their brain

My son loves this school! He has had such a great middle school experience at Hanes thanks to the STEM focus and great teachers. My daughter can't wait to go here next year!

Most of the teachers are pretty good, but the current chorus teacher is horrible. She cannot control a class, and we always have to do worksheets ( that are for the wrong level of chorus) instead of singing. She also made us do 3 worksheets we had already completed and turned in a second time. We will not be ready for the winter concert.

Hanes Middle School has a few great teachers, a lot of average teachers, and more bad teachers than it should, given that it serves the HAG program. I am particularly concerned with the way math is taught (or NOT taught, as the case may be) in the HAG program. My grandson was failing until we got him a tutor one day a week, and now he is making all A's. It is remarkable what actually being taught can do. In addition, the administration (including the Principal and Vice Principal) are generally non-responsive. My grandson got a concussion in his Phys Ed class, which was reported to the school nurse who had my daughter pick him up and take him to the doctor for a confirmed diagnosis. My daughter has emailed and phoned the Principal daily, and has had no response. I thank God my grandson will be going on to high school next year so we don't have to deal with these people ever again!

Last year my child had 24 different language arts teachers in one year. He is in AG. I think there may have been a vacuum created when the principal from 4 years ago left. He was a real dynamo. This year has better, but his science teacher left for maternity leave and I don't expect any consistency for the next month.

I'm a student at Hanes and I hate it first kids in HAG and AG. Get everything better teachers better textbooks better education then normal kids all we have is a pod with bathrooms that are always out of order teachers don't care we walk though rain to get to our classes and the other kids go on field trips and we haven't got a single one at all we get treated diffrent this school only good of you get in HAG or AG other then that it not worth it.

If you can get your kid into the HAG program, this school is great. The Lead the Way Program is worthwhile as well, but often too full for all students who apply to take part. However, as former student who had friends in each segregation of the school, the AG program there was a disappointment, and beyond that, the school is abysmal. The discrepancies between the resources that the HAG and neighborhood kids receive are astounding, which is pretty ironic considering the school puts on an act as if it has "saved" these kids. The kids from the neighborhood are assigned some of the worst teachers, and are often looked down upon by the rest of the school and administrators - all while the kids in HAG classes are assigned great teachers, and esteemed by the entire school. Teachers let tons of kids with tons of potential in these classes slip through the cracks - often times the teachers are unaware of how to control their classes. I'm sure some of them would qualify for the great programs in the school if someone would just pay them more attention. Case and point, the school uses the smart kids fancy awards drawn by the magnet program to make it look as if they've fixed the school.

I agree with previous comments that remark that this school is getting worse. I enrolled my daughter in 6th grade this year based in the information I read in the NC Report Card but the school is not causing me that good impression at all. The last report is two years old and it is obvious, since the first visit to the school, that it does not describe how the school is now. I am not very happy with my choice and neither is my daughter. Considering other public schools in the county this is still the third but I am feeling really concerned about public schools and do not imagine this can change but for the worst.
