I attended Pilot from 1979 to 1983 and found it be an enormously positive experience. I was diagnosed late with a "learning disability" but would now be called a developmental delay. My public school experience in an overcrowded Kindergarten was pretty awful from the bus ride to the moment I returned. Fortunately my Mom found the UD lab school before transitioning me to Pilot School. Pilot was able quickly recognize my strengths and weaknesses and helped me through several early learning hurdles as I was quite behind in several areas upon entering including reading. However, my reading transformation was so remarkable in the first year I want from barely recognizing letters to reading and spelling so well the Librarian worked with me one on one to keep me challenged. I also have to give kudos to the PE teacher who also worked with me one on one when he recognized I could not throw or catch a ball and was getting creamed in every PE game. He also got us running through the woods, taught us to canoe in the pool, and had us doing archery in summer camp. As a shy child, I would have never asked at the age for help on my own with PE but this extra push made a huge difference for me socially in and out of school. After leaving Pilot, I attended a private school in Delaware and then the University of Delaware where I graduated with honors and had a successful career since.

Pilot has been a game changer for my child and our family. Our child has dyslexia and dyscalculia but is otherwise a 100% typical child. Her learning differences made her stick out like a sore thumb at her old school and was severely impacting her confidence. After just a few months at Pilot, she gained several reading levels and her math skills improved. Homework that used to be a battle was done mostly at school at extended care and there were no more tears and fights at home! Our family dynamic shifted from us being the "bad guys" trying to get her to do what she needed to do, to us being able to just be her parents. Pilot is giving her the tools and confidence she needs to manage her learning issues long-term while helping her improve her reading and math skills. The small class size, differentiated instruction and individualized curriculums are all things a typical school just can't provide due to a lack of resources. Pilot has the formula for success for any child with language based learning differences. Moreover, they have incredible art and music programs led by teachers with expertise in learning differences. The facility is second-to-none: a slide from the 2nd floor to 1st floor in the library, a huge zero-entry salt water pool, rock wall, sprawling campus...I could go on and on. While we didn't use these services, so I cannot speak to them, they also have on-site OT, PT, and a FT Psychologist and therapies are provided during the school day. What more could you ask for?? And don't let the sticker price scare you off - Pilot will try and meet financial need to ensure all children who need a specialized education can get it. AND they remained in-person through COVID! I can't say enough about this school. Stop looking.

The Pilot School truly creates individualized curriculum and instruction for my kids that has been absolutely essential and successful in helping my daughter finally learn to read. Her needs are extensive and unique, even in this specialized school, and they have diligently pursued every possible strategy and programming they felt might be useful. The Pilot School's staff create a milieu that translates into a powerful sense of safety and security for student's to take learning and other risks that they would never do otherwise. This school has been positively life altering in my children's and our whole family's life in a way we will never be able to fully express.

My daughter started at the Pilot School this September after 2 miserable years at a charter school. She use to say that she hated school and just wanted to go and get school over with, so she could be done. She use to refer to school as her "job." Now she asks to stay after school at the Pilot School. Her confidence, social skills and self esteem. Have grown exponentially in just a few months. Recently, she told me that she wants to be a teacher when she grows up and teach at the Pilot School. Before she would tell people she wants to be nothing. Her academic skills have improved wonderfully. She couldn't even spell her last name when she began at the Pilot School. Now she can not only spell her last name, but very complex words. She has achieved many other skills. The school communicates with me and I know what is going on. They truly care and want to see my daughter succeed. I am grateful to all the people who helped my daughter get to the pilot school in addition to the talented professionals who are educating her now. My daughter has a chance now and will succeed in life. Thank you!

Amazing program! The dedicated teachers and staff sincerely care about your child. My son will be starting his sixth year at Pilot School and has had wonderful invested teachers who truly want him to succeed and meet his goals as much as his father and I do.
