Kindergarten Teacher Cecilia was one of the worst teachers my daughter ever had. My daughter screamed and cried going to her class for months and she never had this problem with her prior daycare or prior preschool teachers. She didn't learn ANY Spanish in this class. The teacher failed to invite us (her parents) to the school Christmas play that my daughter was in, despite seeing me daily at drop off and pick up so my daughter was ALONE on the day of the play. The teacher gossiped to other teachers about my daughter (I heard this directly from another teacher). We HIRED A SPANISH TUTOR to teach my daughter Spanish as my daughter did not learn Spanish in Cecilia's class. I withdrew my daughter from this school at the end of the academic year and put her in private school due to this woman. My daughter flourished in the Catholic school where she felt loved and cared for, despite having trauma from her experience at Grace Hudson. A loving teacher at the Catholic school worked very hard with my daughter for months to undo the trauma my daughter experienced. The principal at this school was well aware of the situation but failed to do anything about this teacher. I received an apology from a veteran teacher at Grace Hudson (who has since retired) who said she was sorry for how my daughter was treated. When another teacher has to apologize for you, that speaks volumes.

Grace Hudson Elementary School is a Dual Language Immersion model. All students are taught in Spanish and English, with a full immersion model. In Kindergarten, 90% of the instruction time is in Spanish, working up to 50/50 in English and Spanish by third grade. Because of the dual language model, TEST SCORES FOR THIS SCHOOL ARE VERY UNRELIABLE AND DECEPTIVE. Don't be fooled! All students are tested in English. Because their instruction is mostly in Spanish for the first few years, the school overall does not fare well in standardized test scores for the lower grades. But if you really care about data, take a deeper look at the scores in fourth and fifth grade. Once you factor in socio-economic status, the test scores for this school are super high. It's a fabulous learning environment for any family who values diversity, values a second language, and wants their child to be stimulated and challenged in school. Also, if your family follows through with the Dual Language model through to high school, your child will graduate with a Seal of Biliteracy on their High School Diploma. Awesome!

The Great Schools rating of 2 out of 10 is not indicative of the quality of education at this school, which has been very good. The school serves a working Latino community as well as the caucasion community in the poorer section of town, but is the only school in the district where enrollment is increasing due to parents choosing this school over others in the area. The teachers are excited about the Spanish immersion program and are very passionate, engaged, and highly competent. I have my two children at this school, and my wife and I both have advanced degrees. Poor test scores only show that many of the students have English as a second language, which is the language of the standardized tests. My second graders are reading and writing in Spanish, and have a broad Spanish vocabulary and can conjugate their verbs. They are also doing math at the appropriate level for their grade. This is a very good school.
