I attended State Street in 1959 and it was a very good school. Later in the mid 1970's -1980's my two sons attended and it was a good school with caring teachers.

This is a architecturally beautiful school, and there are some great staff and teachers.... BUT there is a LARGE tendency to blame parents for children not making the grade, no matter how much time is spent with them after school hours. There have been 3 principals in 3 years, and this year they didn't meet standards under No Child Left Behind. All year I worked dilligently with my children, to find that they weren't supported in the the classroom. They would bring home a weeks worth of homework one day, then nothing for days... so then they were "cramming" information and assignments. The pick-up and drop-off of students was one of the most un-safe and chaotic systems (there isn't one... leaving 3 rows of cars to take over the block for 30 minutes some days) Keep in mind that there are children trying to make it across these 3 lanes of impatient parents. I tried to make it with this school, after 2 years I'm giving up on it for the sake of my childrens' futures.

I don't think that there is a better school in Topeka. The teachers are wonderful they take the time to make sure that your children understand. There are many before and after school clubs that keep your student active and making better choices for themselves. If you want a great school with teachers that care I say pick State Street!

This is a great school to send your child/ren. They make the grade and the help the kids get there. With all the wonderful programs that they offer they help to make great kids come out of the school.
