I could go on and on about the negative things that happened at the Sherman school but I’ll save my breath. Just don’t even bother.

Small class sizes, very involved, dedicated teachers. Ms. Cathy Davidson (K) and Ms. Kerry McDevitt (3) are truly engaging, caring, world class instructors (at or exceeding the level of private school instructors at some of NYC's best-known private schools). The school (at least the public facing aspect) is extremely well run by Principal Dr. Jeff Melendez and Vice Principal Brian Kalkreuth, who seem to work tirelessly no matter what exigent circumstance they encounter. Under their direction, the school implemented the most well thought out COVID plan we could hope for and we have full faith that they can take on ANYTHING. The SPTO (parent teacher organization) is very involved. The school is blessed with an excellent art teacher (Mrs. Yagid) and music teacher (Mr. Trinchillo) who devote so much more time than they have to, to the students, a very engaged school counselor, Dr. Belinda Badger. We suspect the presence of an excellent school librarian working behind the scenes as the books that came home w/ our kindergartener were quite well curated. (We never met him/her, sadly.) GREAT communication from the school on everything at all times. Amazing work ethic from everyone we encountered. In our opinion there is no better public school in the northeast, and I suspect very few private schools, as well.

The administration here is atrocious. They speak derogatorily to parents who raise concerns and I have heard horror stories from present and many former staff members that have worked there. Zero trust.

Sherman School is incredibly impressive despite its small size and the small community it draws from for support. Our teachers (Ms. McDevitt and Ms. Davidson) appear to be fantastic educators and our children seem to love their time, here. They're learning in leaps and bounds -- and even more importantly, they're happy and nurtured. We're particularly impressed with Ms. McDevitt's social studies curriculum; Ms. Davison really does develop super writers! The school is well managed. The principle, assistant principle, and all central office staff have been accessible and helpful, seemingly very kind (though we've never really spent a lot of time with them in person given that we came in during COVID). Safety protocols are EXTREMELY well thought out. We truly don't think that the very spendy private school in Manhattan we attended in years prior has anything on Sherman School from a pedagogical standpoint. (The food on the other hand.... :)

Excellent school, One of the very few schools to open for school year 2020-2021 with a very comprehensive and thought out plan.

Overall, the education that the teachers provide is pretty good but the entire experience is ruined by the disgusting new administration that has come in the last few years and treated the school like a corporation. This is not the place to go if you are looking for an authentic care for your kids - children are solely numbers.
