Moderate. Some teachers are great, some not so supportive.

Overall it’s an okay school but there needs to be more diversity with teachers and more help for parents with special needs children. You should be able to check in on your kid whenever you feel like and there should be reports sent home daily for nonverbal children.

Madison Elementary is a caring and nurturing environment. The teachers are knowledgeable and care about the students. The office staff and administration are easy to work with and care about the students. I am looking forward to another great year!

My son has attended MES since the middle of his kindergarten year. He is now in 2nd grade. He is extremely shy and our wonderful staff and teachers have gone above and beyond to encourage him to come out of his shell. He has good grades and perfect citizenship. Our school may not be fancy on the outside but the heart is there, on the inside. Small classes with teachers that care...

My son attended MES for two years. His academic achievement plummeted during those two years. The teachers are underpaid in comparison to surrounding counties. We saw two good teachers leave to take positions in other divisions. The division seems to be a training ground for new graduates. The facilities are shocking. The children sit on the dirty cafeteria floor during assemblies, as there is no auditorium. The principal last year was unapproachable, lacked kindness, and was highly punitive. This was largely true for the 5th grade teachers as well, with the exception of Mrs. Brown. The principal and some teachers discussed private matters regarding my child in public areas of the school as other children walked past. My child went from scoring advanced on SOLs and benchmarks to scoring "proficient" (aka average). He went from practically straight A's to C's and D's. Moving to Caroline County was the biggest mistake of my life.

Madison Elementary is not a bad school, our oldest son attended and had no issues. Our younger son was another story. The first principal we had there was Mrs.Heingardner, who was adored by the children and staff. She was on track to make Madison a truly great school. HOWEVER...she was transferred to another school within the county to work her magic there and since then the school seems to be on a slow downhill slide. Some of the staff can be vindictive towards the children, and we ran into this with our youngest son last year. So much so, that we decided to make the switch to private school for him. The last month of school at Madison was geared towards benchmark testing and SOL's, anyway, so several weeks of what could have been new instruction were lost. Our son got "burned out" on all the repetition and drilling and couldn't understand why they kept making him do the same work over and over. He aced his SOL's but did not use the test taking method his teacher preferred, so she banned him from the pizza party AND the sub sandwich lunch. I am told by a parent whose child still attends Madison that they now see many behavioral problems with students. I'm just glad we're gone!
