All three of my children are High Meadows alumni. They were students from preschool to 8th grade. I recently became reengaged with the school for their 50th anniversary and student outcomes are the same now as they were 20 years ago. I have witnessed the love of learning, the self-advocacy, and the ethical leadership carried out in my children’s adult lives. In any given situation, they are seen as leaders, excellent communicators, and advocates for themselves and others. Many thanks to the faculty and staff who act more as guides and evaluators than the traditional sense of teachers talking at the students. Academically, they are prepared for any type of post High Meadows higher learning, traditional public, progressive private, ivy league, etc. Even better is that the students are very adept at choosing higher learning that “fits” them. Additionally, the community is amazing. Communication is welcomed and encouraged by leadership. My children and I have made lifelong friends through High Meadows. I am still friends with many other parents of High Meadows students, even though our lives have taken us in many different directions.

This is our third year at High Meadows, we started in Pre-K, and it continues to be a wonderful fit for our child and family. High Meadows is a school that not only values academics but appreciates that young children's social-emotional development is critical to their growth. Students are encouraged to take risks (there's so much to be learned from climbing a tree or navigating a tire swing), think critically and advocate for and be themselves. The progressive learning philosophy and Lower Years IB Curriculum (which emphasizes experiential learning) leads our child to love to learn and encourages all students to develop problem solving skills while pursuing some of their own areas of interest. The IB Curriculum also provides a global perspective, which is invaluable in a world where collaboration across borders happens each and every day, and the school strongly values diversity, equity, inclusion and justice (across all facets). The foundation of all of the foregoing is the talented and caring teachers and staff at High Meadows. Plus, the school community is amazing -- people associated with High Meadows really do come together to support the school, the students and each other. Family members are welcomed, encouraged and supported in their involvement with the school and the student's education.

Our family has been at High Meadows for 4 years now and have seen incredible growth academically and personally in our two very different learners. We have one child who is an extrovert, very creative and not a fan of “the academics.” Another who is an introvert, likes structure and thrives on the academics. We have found the inquiry driven and project based style of learning at HM to benefit and deeply challenge both of our kids. It harnesses a kids natural curiosity, by encouraging them to ask questions, then use those questions to explore and research topics of interest. The project-based learning has kept it hands-on, fun and interesting for them. One example was their study and research of ancient civilizations. Their writing project was to then write a short play about their chosen civilization. They did hands-on work by sewing native wardrobe and creating the set designs. They then directed, acted in and performed their plays for the school community! We have also valued the balance between their academic growth, and social/emotional growth. Our kids continue to learn how to use their voice, listen to and respect others, and navigate interpersonal relationships. We were initially attracted to the style of learning at HM, but what has become the leading factor in our kids success and happiness at the school is the faculty and staff. They are everything a parent hopes for when relinquishing their child to the care of another. Their engagement, care and genuine interest in each child’s growth is at the forefront. The fact that they don’t have to teach to a mandated assessment allows them to really reach and challenge each child individually. Their passion for what they do can be seen on a daily basis. Some of our friends have commented on the added stress and pressure they're kids are experiencing at other schools since the start of the pandemic. We have been blessed not to experience that at HM. Our kids academic growth is on par with their friends at other schools, but the big difference is their joy and love of learning continues to be strong. If you are looking for a school that embodies the joy of childhood; challenges kids to think deeply and facilitate their growth; instills compassion and understanding; and cultivates a love of learning…you’ll want to check out High Meadows.

Both my children have been at High Meadows since kindergarten- now in 5th and 7th grades. We absolutely treasure this unique school and what it has done for our kids in terms of developing their sense of self, fostering responsibility and engagement in their own learning,, and building positive relationships with teachers, peers and staff through classrooms that value a sense of community, caring, empathy and reflection. My kids are more confident in facing challenges, being thoughtful risk-takers, and solving problems than I ever was and I credit their teachers and years at HMS for that. Not to mention that the campus itself is a childhood dream - it feels like an exuberant summer camp environment all year long. It is definitely a different experience (for the kids and also for parents!) than a traditional public or private school, so do spend the time to visit and attend the events offered to get a sense of what differences to expect. Yes, younger students will climb trees, interact with animals, and spend time in the woods, but no, they are not unsafe and will always be cared for. Yes, older classrooms will discuss current/historical events as student questions come up, but always in a developmentally appropriate way and with open communication with parents and guardians to continue conversations at home. Yes they include learning about diversity, equity & inclusion in the context of every person being worthy of respect and kindness, but not to the exclusion of or promoting “guilt” in anyone. This is a school, they will primarily learn reading, writing, spelling, math, social studies and scientific concepts; they just do it in a way that focuses on the whole child as opposed to having to teach to a standardized test.Ask questions of current parents and current students and make sure it’s a good fit for your family and student. For us, High Meadows has given our kids a magical childhood and the most joyful and supportive learning environment we could hope for.

It was so bad that student fell down from a tree and the teacher didn't care, also my daughter said that the teachers were so mean to them, i won't recommend this school

High Meadows places a strong emphasis on whole-child learning. Our child has been at this school for a year, and the growth as a person and a learner has been a wonderful thing to watch. The school community as a whole is supportive and welcoming to everyone. We are extremely happy at High Meadows and highly recommend the school.

Our family has had a wonderful experience at High Meadows. We have been part of this school community for almost a decade - our oldest started in PreK and is now in the Middle Years (grades 6-8) program. Our two younger children are in the Early Years (PreK-3rd grade) program. We were initially drawn to High Meadows because of the importance they place on experiential learning and the beautiful outdoor learning spaces. We have stayed at High Meadows because of the high-quality academics, emphasis on whole-child development, and the genuine joy of learning fostered in our children. High Meadows has been a good match for each of my children, although they each have very different learning styles. Class sizes are small and teachers are able to get to know the children beyond their academic skills. Strengths and growth opportunities are identified. Teachers work with families to help keep advanced students interested and provide ways for them to engage more deeply with subjects where they excel. When there are places where a student needs help to meet expectations, those conversations are timely and child-focused. My student with learning differences is not just accommodated, but supported. The Support program at High Meadows helps students understand how they learn best and gives them the tools they need to succeed and to advocate for themselves. As an IB school, there is a focus on students understanding not just their role as learners but also how they fit into their school, local, and world communities. Subject areas are tied together and reinforced through the Connections classes (art, music, PE, lab, environmental sustainability, and Spanish). Educators, Administrators, and Staff across the campus are all passionate about children and the way we educate them. Family involvement is both welcome and expected.

Please be very careful when looking at this school. Ask a lot of questions... ask how much time is spent on math and reading... Then ask what the other 6 hours are filled with (it's not going to be science, not technology). Ask if they ever do a spelling test - in any grade. Ask if there are math facts drills. Ask if they play Mindcraft in Music class. Ask if they read (controversial) books like "My Princess Boy" to young grades. Ask if Social Justice is an overriding message in the classrooms. Ask if they teach LGBTQ to middle schoolers. Ask if they have offered Pronoun Pins to the middle schoolers to show that pronouns should not be assumed. Ask if all political parties are welcomed at the school. Choose very carefully.

We've been at High Meadows for three years and have been very happy. The campus is incredible, and it allows the kids to spend so much time outside of a classroom. I have found their approach to supporting kid's independence and socialemotional learning very helpful for my children. The teachers we have had so far have demonstrated a real love for kids and learning.

My child entered this school in the “Middle Years” program. The students are not accepting of new students at this age and the administration and teachers did not do anything to help with the acclimation process. My child was called by some of the students as “stupid” and referred to as a “public school kid” but most of the time was ostracized by the other students and felt very lonely. It is my understanding that the three new students in the Middle Years program all had difficulty making friends. It is my hope by writing this review the administration will take action to help with the acclimation process for older students and that future students will not have this issue. The school is also not a good fit for children with learning challenges such as ADHD as they are not setup to handle it. There are positive aspects about High Meadows. My child had a lot of fun during the Jekyll Island trip. There are great outdoor activities at the school and my child did enjoy a lot of the mini courses. If you have a child that is elementary school age and does not have learning challenges, High Meadows could potentially be a good fit.

After 13 years and having 3 kids at the school (2 current and 1 alumn), I rate HMS a 10 out 10.

50/50It’s great for my smart, calm, science minded kid-who lacks self confidence. HMS has helped her feel loved and supported.Meanwhile, my brilliant kid who gets bored and disrupts the class is kicked out (reminder-teachers said she wasn’t learning in class and was falling behind- previous teachers are now tutors plus homeschooling =my kid doing 2nd grade work 2 months after being kicked out of high meadows)

This is our daughter’s first year at High Meadows School and we can see such an amazing shift as a whole person. The moment I entered the campus the first time I visited, I just knew that this school was unique and full of magic. I can sense the immense amount of support and care for each child and how the teachers value each of their students. My daughter LOVES going to school and always comes back home filled with joy. High Meadows School makes sure to bring the beauty and inspiration in nature to the classroom. It brings me such peace knowing that the children spend so much time outside instead of inside a big building with very little natural light. My husband and I cannot wait for our son to join and thrive from this incredible experience as well. I recently went to their Alumni Night event and was truly amazed by each alumn’s confidence, self-worth, and how they spoke with such passion. My only wish is that I could redo my childhood and go to school at High Meadows School. :)

This is truly one of the best schools. The teachers care about each individual child and their needs. I could have never asked for a more caring place for my kids. They LOVE school and are so upset when the school is closed for snow days. The teachers are trained in positive disciple and do know how to deal with conflicts between students. I read the previous review and I'm not sure how the fact that a teacher plays the guitar is relevant to how effective of a teacher that person is. In fact, that is an extremely well regarded teacher and anyone would be lucky to be in their classroom.

The school claims to be progressive but we have found that the public schools are more progressive than High Meadows.

I cannot speak highly enough of our family's experience at High Meadows School. My 8th grade daughter and 6th grade son have attended since they were three years old. Both will be entering high school with the option of enrolling in all advanced level academic classes (without any outside tutoring needed during their time at High Meadows), and - more importantly to my husband and I - both kids have built incredible skills in communication, collaboration, and using the creativity encouraged in the incredible Connections classes to connect and apply solutions to real-world problems. We feel we hit the jackpot with the teachers of this school and will forever be grateful to each and every single one of them.

We have been at High Meadows for 7 years. We really like the emphasis on the whole-child, not just the academic side. The teachers and staff know our kids well - academically, emotionally and socially. We love the outdoor time the students get, both from a recess-type time and from learning time that takes place using the campus' meadows, woods, gardens, and various animals. We also value the process approach to work vs. the outcome approach. We routinely see how well prepared our kids are to think through a challenge or question and offer an opinion. We know that High Meadows has played a big role in this preparedness.

This is our 5th year at High Meadows and we are delighted with the education our child receives. As with any school, we have had teachers we "clicked" with and some we didn't but always felt that our child was valued and thriving. The school does a great job inspiring my child to learn and provides opportunities for self-study or deeper dives into topics of interest. We love that our child has the opportunity to move throughout the day... There is plenty of outside meadow time, "half-time" stretching in art, the ability to move around the classroom to find a spot that feels "just right" for learning, and more. To us the instruction has always felt encouraging but without too much stress. The focus is on process much more so than product and we feel that is reflected in our child's work and progress. High Meadows is different and we like it that way.

High Meadows has been a wonderful experience for us. It has allowed our children to love learning again. The progressive approach to education brings to light the school should be. They develop the entire child. Beginning with academics and ending with the social emotional learning so many schools forget about these days. Our girls are thriving and we could not be happier
