New principal who took over in 9/2022 is not the same good presence as a leader as before. Similarly the morale in the faculty is dwindling and they are unhappy which reigns down on the kids. Lack of sufficient staffing means 60 children in the gym at once with two teachers and they did that with masks on and never once even on the best weather days, did they go outside. The children deserve better. No shows for the younger kids in any kind of performance but other Randolph elementary schools do. Almost no toys on the playground and when they parents asked them to get toys they did and then they broke and were never replaced. No place for kids to eat outside so they don’t. Bullying is present and the victim gets blamed with retaliation. School needs new leaders. It’s a shame. Dr Burns was the principal before and it was wonderful. My child cried daily until we withdrew him. Now he thrives. They have very poor understanding of special needs children and they do anything they can to avoid putting the right accommodations in place. The counselor is split between schools and when she did come she was not helpful. She played a read aloud book and then came another month and played the same one. Music teacher not innovative. Art was amazing. Lots of time outs in this school if you don’t literally walk on a straight line properly for gym class. Parents are discouraged from having a role in the education. They lack a gifted program which is required by law. They will not challenge your child and in fact I was told by the teacher that math isn’t her thing so she can’t teach beyond the grade level to differentiate. They would also not pull the child out to challenge either. Board of education meetings are no dialogue and limit the audience to 3 minutes. They just closed their education meetings to the public entirely after the Superintendant erroneously thought the Zoom was off. She badmouthed the parents on live Zoom by accident. They plan sexual education and removed any parental input or conversation. Meetings are closed.

Shongum is a special place. Students are supported with enthusiastic staff and the administration set the tone for positive learning. This is a special elementary school in this community.
