I was a student here for 4 years. I moved here to start my freshman year. While I did meet some good friends, the staff failed to care about bullying, did not treat everyone fairly, and they hire some of the worst administration. I was sent to an administration office when I should have been in class to try and “make friends” with the girl that had been bullying me intensely for 2 years. This same girl was never punished or questioned about anything she had ever done to me which includes pushing me into a bathroom stall. Sure this school has some smart students, but they only care about the ones that are apart of a sports team. This school also completely fails with diversity, while everyone is from the “country” sometimes it feels too “old school”. They need some big changes. In my opinion, they need to fire some people for not actually doing their job when children are being constantly bullied all around them. We need to remember, the grades do not matter more than how we are being treated everyday. Thank god I will never have to go back.

I attended hhs for about 3 years and it was the absolute worst time of my life. My family moved to the area from pikesville & immediately I was bullied for my religion since I am Jewish and there is definitely a racial and alt right approach here. The teachers and sports coaches did absolutely nothing about the bullying and in some cases try to say it was my fault or I was asking for it. The bullying was so unbearable I had to leave a year early because it was non stop even though my parents have met with the staff numerous times to address it but then again this is a community where everyone knows everyone so it’s known the staff grew up and became besties with the families that have lived here for generations and I’m not surprised if they stood up for the bullies. Please parents don’t ever send your children to a school like this at all no matter how good the ratings are that doesn’t tell you how the kids are when it comes to treating other with kindness and respect

I would not personally recommend this school for anyone looking for a well-rounded and accepting education.

Overall our experience has been good, very dedicated and involved teaching staff. I've found the main problem to be the kids themselves, there are long established social groups dating back to pre-K in some circumstances and they are quite unsophisticated and co-dependent socially, outsiders are treated with suspicion and unfriendliness. Encountered the 'mean girl' phenomena here more than ever before and was very disappointed. I imagine for some kids this is pretty harmful over time, but thankfully we have only had to endure 2.5 years before graduation. Have also found this high school to be quite racially segregated. We are white and not from the US originally, but at our Florida school the peer groups were very integrated and quite functional. Have encountered some very 'alt right' attitudes from some kids here, and a general lack of civility in this area. Discovered one mother with a long history in this community and established friendships with other parents had actually sent anonymous hate letters to another mother with a daughter who was a bit of a square peg, the mind boggles........Very much looking forward to graduation and leaving this area for a more forward thinking, positive environment.

Fyi, folks, HHS has been, and is a '10' rated school. Data here (7), simply incorrect. Facts: U.S. News rates HHS #14th in academics in the state, and perennially in the top 10. And the U.S. Dep't of Education just named HHS a Blue Ribbon School. Definition? "...identifies ... schools with high-achieving students in reading and math. Fewer than 8,500 schools nationwide have earned the honor." Also, noteworthy, every elementary school that feeds into HMS is a '9,' with HMS earning a '10.' Clearly, there is a data issue here.

I have to disagree with the previous reviews. While, the students are indeed generally extremely polite, well-rounded, successful, etc, they're also overwhelmed and sleep-deprived. As a student, I never felt like the staff cared about me; rather, I understood very well that they were often irritated and unhappy with their jobs. There are so few good teachers. Students are often forced to learn the material themselves to make up for a lack of quality teaching. Of course, the teachers are credited with Hereford's stellar national rank (those rankings, by the way, are based primarily upon test scores-- which is all Hereford cares about). So come to Hereford! You'll be addicted to coffee (always a plus), get no help from teachers or staff (extreme independence is always a good thing, right?), learn that adults don't care about you (who needs them anyways?!), learn to care only about test scores (nothing else is more important, of course), play lots of sports (that's actually fine, except with all the homework and practices you'll be going to bed at around 2am), and love your life! Wow I miss it already. Go bulls!

As a current student, I can testify to the strength and quality of the education I have received over the past three years. I have been challenged in many of my classes, and in instances where my classmates were falling behind and I had a desire to go beyond the curricula, my teachers gave me that opportunity. Both the faculty and the administration truly care about students here, and I couldn't have been happier in that regard. My education, however, is not without its flaws. Hereford has a remarkable lack of diversity, and the vast majority of my classmates seem blithely unaware of the social and economic problems that exist in our society. Students don't see the value of diversity and different perspectives. I don't think students are "globally competitive" if they can't look at someone who is different than they and truly view them with equal standing. Moreover, many of the teachers disregard this problem, and that discourages minority students. Other high-achieving BCPS schools are far better in this regard. Overall, it's a great school and I received a wonderful education, but there are serious cultural problems here.

If you are planning to move to the Baltimore area, try to find a location in the Hereford Zone in Northern Baltimore County so your students can attend Hereford High School. They will receive a top notch education in a beautiful rural location with lots of opportunities available locally and in the very nearby Baltimore metro area. My husband and all three sons attended Hereford, so I can personally attest to all of the above!
