We put our child in this school after assessments and previous teachers recommended our child would benefit from a higher level of academia. Initial open house presentarion by school Deans checked all the boxes. Unfortunately Basis OV could not be further from a structured, academic focused environment. There is constant teacher turnover, the poor execution of communication for both parent and alumni is atrocious. Bogging kids down with "busy" work without teaching element breaks down their natural curiosity to learn. The leadership is non existant and support staff rather detached. The potentially good teachers dont last. Would not recommend for high achievement type of students. The lack of physical activity or sports is also a huge negative in addition to the stressful environment. I can only speak to my poor review to Oro Valley Basis location.

We evaluated various options before deciding to send our daughter to Basis Oro Valley Primary (BOVP) for kindergarten. Of note, we live in a great public school district, and the neighborhood school that she could have attended is highly rated. Ultimately, we determined that BOVP was the right choice for us. Due to full-time employment for both mom and dad, we also opted for the full-day kindergarten option for our 5-year-old daughter. We came across cautionary "advice" about BOVP when evaluating our options for kindergarten and elementary school but know that people are often quick to share their thoughts on negatives and are less proactive when it comes to the positives. It is for that reason that I am writing a GLOWING review of BOVP, especially now that we have wrapped up the first 2 of 3 trimesters of the school year. Kindergarten can be a time of HUGE transition for many kids. It was no different for our daughter, as she spent the first, almost-5 years of her life, attending the same Early Childhood Education Program, becoming familiar with the routine, staff, and learning structure. As is the natural course of things, there had to be an end to that "preschool" program and a transition to kindergarten and beyond. What impressed us most about BOVP was 1) the emphasis on having multiple teachers/staff involved in nearly every learning lesson/activity (i.e. both a lead teacher and a fellow as the primaries in the classroom, but also other teachers or staff giving instruction for different subject matters), 2) the implementation of a structure that empowers students to take ownership of their academics and encourages them to achieve with full support, 3) the consideration for safety on campus with regular communication to parents, and 4) the use of science-based evidence for employing unique curriculum components (i.e. teaching kindergartners to write in cursive from the start). Our daughter has THRIVED at BOVP. Yes, she has tests - averaging 3-4 a month total in the areas of math and literacy. However, she's never exhibited any anxiety in taking those tests because the teachers do a great job of preparing her for them. She also has homework on an average of 3 nights per week, but she's able to finish all of it without issue - usually in less than 10 minutes. She gets exposure to much more than the standard kindergartener, and will no doubt continue to excel at BOVP. We have been so impressed by the teachers, staff, and curriculum.

It’s been good. It isn’t perfect but I feel like this is a school that is for a certain type of student. My son finishes things quickly and gets bored easily. It’s an environment that keeps him on his toes and I appreciate that because he would always rather be socializing. I get annoyed with the heavy handed fundraising. I get the teachers should get paid more and charter schools receive less per student. However there is no library, there are hardly any books, there are no buses, there aren’t hot lunches, no special needs programs, no gifted programs...etc. It feels corporate at times. Some of the teachers are ridiculously inexperienced. They mean well and know there subject but haven’t quite figured out the teaching part of it. I think if you have a bright student who needs a challenge Basis is worth a look. You have to be willing to leave if it doesn’t work out or if your child can’t keep up. Some of the parents seem to struggle with that.

Horrible experience for my child. It’s been a year since I pulled her out and she still requires therapy.
