I absolutely enjoyed my stay at Newark High School! I am a recent graduate, and currently studying to be a teacher at Ohio State because of the influence from my high school teachers. To put it in perspective, I always grew up telling myself I’m going to be a high school dropout, which started even before I started my freshman year. That was due to my major depression and anxiety issues that I had, and because I never had a teacher/administer tell me I have potential. My sophomore year was a very difficult year for me, and was on the verge of never going back (had nothing to do with school) until my Councilor (Mr. Johnson) took me out of class to talk to me about life. Keep in mind, I’ve never spoken to him before and took time to get to know me. From there on out, he inspired me and changed my perception of life to what it is today. He got me out of my quiet, shy shell into talking to literally anyone. That was when I formed many relationships with all of my teachers and classmates and loved life. I went from having straight C’s in the beginning to straight A’s my senior year, getting a scholarship to college, and making the deans list almost every semester in college studying to be a TEACHER. If you would have asked me where I would be after high school when I was 13, I would probably say I would be dead. The Newark high school staff has changed my life in so many ways, and I know some of my classmates I graduated with would say the same thing.

My experience with this school has not been a pleasant one. This is my son's first year at Newark High School. Due to the coronavirus, me and my wife decided to keep him at home if school was to start back up again. Eventually, the district announced plans to return, and we filled out a paper to keep him at home. The Friday before school was to go back in-person, my wife got an email which basically stated that the school was forcing all of the kids in enriched classes to come back! After much back and forth, the school finally allowed my child to stay at home, but he would have to drop enriched classes, would not get credit for classes he was already in, and received grades for, (my son took high school geometry in middle school), and the days he was "absent from class" (which were not true) would still be counted on his attendance. (This makes it look like he skipped 7 days of school, and was tardy on 3 different days). They then transitioned the students who were still online to Plato from Google Classroom. Google Classroom wasn't perfect, but it was organized and had real assignments. Plato is simply a joke. It has 50 or more slides for each lesson in each class, a student can put anything down for the "activity", and the lesson is followed by a 5 point test, which is what is counted as a grade for the class. Also, students who are placed in quarantine (there is an outbreak at the high school now, but they still have in-person classes) get to do real work on Google Classroom, and get to attend live Zoom meetings for there classes. This is not the case for students whose parents chose to keep them home. The school is playing favorites with in-person students and online-only students. Also, the school district stated that there would be no pass-and-fail grades for anyone. However, when my son got his grade card, he was failing all of the Plato classes, even though he had done the work, was ahead in class, and had never received a test score lower than a 4 out of 5. In addition, the school does not have social distancing, students congregate, and few wear masks. (Just look at the pictures and read what other parents have to say). As the parent of a student who goes to this school, and being a former teacher myself, I have never been involved with such a bad school in my entire life.

Poor communication with parents, they play favoritism and over all discussed with the way they talk to parents when they FINALLY decide to interact with them and how they continually tell me my son does not belong there because of social anxiety if you are not there to help kids and mentor them find a different job

Overall, this school is nothing but clownery. From poor teaching abilities from staff, problematic staff members and bullying, this school is really one of the worst schools out there, and I’ve been to many schools. I think the most unsettling thing is the amount of student drama and problematic students. Many of them do drugs, start fights, spread rumors, I even had a teach tell me that there was once a stabbing on school grounds. Most kids feel unsafe, struggle with problems no one seems to care about while having to balance pressure that’s put on all students because of our below average test scores and ratings. I would never ever recommend this school to anyone, it’s not just a disappointment but an embarrassment.

Overall the school is embarrassing, the sport kids are the most popular, people who play video games are frowned apon or made fun of (without it being nObvious), and teachers are decent. If you do get something stolen, the school would be good at tracking it down.
