Supportive community with lots of parent volunteers in classrooms/field trips/sports events. Opportunities for academically gifted students; great support for kids with learning disabilities. School superintendent is very accessible.

The Middle School has a great teacher set up. They team up into houses so there are a number of teachers divided between the students to give the students optimal learning. The teachers communicate with the parents quickly. If there are problems, the staff works together to bring the student up to speed. Each student gets their needs addressed individually instead of as a class. There is a lot of music opportunity for the students. The sport program needs work though. There are sports offered through tri-county which is expensive and takes a lot of time and commitment to getting the kids to and from their sport event.

It's a great school, and the teachers are great, but I feel like the school is WAY too focused on music, art, and sports. Kids literally have to leave their actually useful academic classes for band lessons if they are in band every week. School should be focused on education, not entertainment. Overall though, it's a great school. I've never felt that kids with family in the area get special treatment. I also find it to be very accepting, though that might be wasted due to lack of diversity. I am definitely glad I went to school there, and I would recommend sending your kids there.

I teach middle school in a nearby district, and my oldest is currently in 8th grade. I continue to be impressed by the caliber of teachers that are in the Mt. Horeb Middle School. There are a very small few that probably should retire, as it is obvious that their heart just isn't in it--- but there probably aren't many places that don't have that issue! Most of my son's teachers are committed to ensuring my son enters high school as prepared as he can be. They hold him accountable for his responsibilities, and on the same token, they are compassionate and I have no doubt that they truly care about his success. The staff is approachable and friendly, and I would not hesitate to recommend enrolling my children again.
