I cannot say enough about Sunset Park Elementary. Both my children attended this school. My eldest is now in a Magnet High School taking all AP classes and my youngest is currently in Sunset Park's Gifted Program. The teachers are caring & excellent educators with years of experience. Administration is top notch & always available. The campus is located in a residential neighborhood with tons of green spaces. We're lucky to have had our kids attend Sunset Park Elementary.

Outstanding, my student is learning and achieving at a high level since he has attended....from kindergarten to 4th grade! Unfortunately only one year left.....wish it were K thru 8.

Really terrible leadership (Principal) and horrendous staff (front office employees). Professionalism and flexibility is out the window in this school. I am not talking about teachers, as my daughter had a pretty good experience with hers, I am talking about management starting with the Principal. I have no idea how that lady learned to manage and no clue who hired her for that job but she has zero abilities to handle an office and deal with parents, specially working parents. As a parent, I have found myself asking different staff members after I get short vague answers from one another. I go above and beyond in order to ask a questions where it seems no one has a straight answer to. One day I asked for summer camp registration and I was told that the lady who's handling that was not there to answer that question and the next couple of days I couldn't register yet because they were not accepting payments and the next couple of days there was no more registration because it was full, just like that. Yes that actually happened to me. Everyone in that office has their own little task and they will not deviate one bit to accommodate anything for any parent, specially, working parents. You do not feel that you are part of the school. Every question and concern is taken with indifference. I had my daughter in the Before Care and After Care programs the entire year and I'm a working dad, and their office will not accept my payments for the program when I drop my daughter off because no one is there to take my payments until 10AM. Even though I'm a divorced dad and my daughter lives in separate homes, the school will not accommodate so I can make my payments the times that I have my daughter. Everything there is a too bad so sad attitude. Who in their right mind would restrict working parents from making payments and making the process more difficult than it has to be? Last year I registered my daughter for Summer camp in that school and she went to Summer camp. This year, my daughter is out of luck for summer camp, I couldn't registered because it was full and the administration will not prioritize their own students from that school. Without prior warning that perhaps spaces were limited this year. Actually, the admin never prioritizes their own students, not to sale the yearbooks, not to accommodate their own students in the summer program, and not for anything

So far not impressed! Meetings with all parents are given in English then repeated in Spanish! Really?!?! Who doesn't understand English needs to bring a translator or school can provide all info in Spanish to who needs. Not make us suffer and wait to hear in 2 languages. Communication between and teachers and parent are poor! 2016 starting off on a bad note

I was a student for many years. when I first came I only spoke spanish and well..as a child changing to a whole different city can be quite scary. however, I was treated lovingly, wonderfully, and greatly!!!! teachers and staff were really nice and later when I came to do internship, I was treated same as before, with loving eyes.

Really bad principal. I understand that staff and teachers felt Ms. Martin was too strict and sometimes didn't show the best way of treating them but any hopes this school had was because of her. New principal lacks a lot of capacity, emotional intelligence and connection with parents. First day of school and you don't let parents go in until 8:20?!?! Honor roll assemblies changed to the mornings so working parents have trouble coming in?!?!?! (She was righteously booed for such a decision) I've personally heard her refer to parents in a very disrespectful manner in front of her staff. She appears as a nice person at first but hides her lack of capacity behind doors. You can tell how she seems annoyed to be there, bothered to have to solve many problems. Ms. Martin was absolutely devoted to the school and children. No time was too late, no field trip took place without her dismissing and welcoming the buses, and laid back teachers felt the pressure to keep their jobs. A message to Ms. Hernandez: Learn to communicate and open up to parents' concerns. Be sympathetic to the fact that working parents are the majority. Dealing with parents' claims comes with the job. If you don't like it, leave room to efficient professionals.

I went to this school from 1986-1992 and now my daughter goes here. I love this school! The staff is amazing and I am very happy with the education she is receiving. The school is always clean and the staff genuinely care about the educational environment as well as the students. The only down side I have noticed is during pick up, drop off, and assemblies, the parents tend to be very rude, lacking basic manners. (won't wait in line, pushy, never say excuse me, talking during announcements, etc.) But considering that is the only negative, it's definitely a wonderful school.

April 2015 review post is wrong. PTA has never chosen students for STEM program. 2014-2015 is only second year for STEM. STEM was started by Ms. Martin the part Principal. Ms. Hernandez the new Principal just started at school 2014-2015. Ms. Martin had a huge meeting year before STEM started and created a committee from parents at the meeting. Committee helped create application and rule for volunteer hour requirement for STEM parents. Only STEM Teachers and the Past Principal reviewed applications and chose students allowed into STEM. Making STEM parents do volunteer hours and be on PTA was good idea because there are more parents at the school helping. I think the kids did more STEM things the first year. PTA in past had a lot of fundraising. PTA worked with past Principal Ms. Martin and bought smart boards and more laptop computers for the school. Past Principal Ms. Martin was very strict with parents and teachers - but good for kids and learning. New Principal Ms. Hernandez looks nicer but she is not doing anything to help kids and make school better. Most teachers are great. I love my child's teachers.

First I'd like to address the last comment..... Mrs. Hernandez the principal of Sunset park Elemetary is doing an amazing job. As far as the STEM program is concerned, it is a wonderful program and will continue to be a wonderful program especially since "PTA" will have no say in who will be in the program! It will be done by a committee fair and square! Not only are the parents happy with Mrs. Hernandez but more importantly the teachers whom our children are being taught by are in a much happier environment. That makes a world of a difference! I love my school!!!

Ever since Sarah Martin left as Principal she took any hope that this school had with her. What a waste of a great program with STEM and what a waste in what Principal Martin took so long to build. At first I thought maybe it was me but now all I hear on a daily basis are parents feeling the same way I feel. Glad it's not just me but sad, really really sad it's become like this. What a shame. Really had hopes my kids would finish here.

The STEM program is excellent and my daughters are excelling at this school. You are expected to be involved in your child's education and they welcome you on campus. I especially like the emphasis on math and science. This year my daughter went to Kennedy Space Center, which I thought was a great addition to her education. The office staff is friendly and efficient and the principal Ms. Martin is very active in the school. You will even see her in the mornings talking to the kids. She runs a very tight ship

Very organized, Great teachers, Great Principal and Vice Principal. Kids are happy and doing great. Parent involvement is good but needs to get better(school does all it can to get them involved). S.T.E.M. Program is top notch.

I was blessed to have found a school like this. Schools make a difference when the people in it make a difference. From the kids to the security staff, the ladies in the cafeteria, the office staff, the teachers and the principal they all work hard to make this school stand out from all the rest of the public schools out there. The school's staff cares a great deal about teaching kids and helping in every way possible. I thank all the teachers who have a taken their extra time to get involved and help my kids. Thank you.

As a parent of three, with two attending Sunset Park Elementary, for 4 years, from Kindergarten to 3rd grade, by far this is a great school to be involve with, furthermore I can say that as far as technology, and staff this school is Great, the best in Kendall. Every teacher is well guide by a wonderful Principal Mrs. Martin. God Bless you all.

Sunset Park Elementary has remained a neighborhood gem that I have been proud to teach at for the past 25 years. Our teachers have a reputation for their nurturing and dedication. Most classrooms are equipped with the latest technology that supports and enriches instruction. Sunset Park is now a S.T.E.M. Academy.

I am so grateful to have found Sunset Park Elementary. My son started Kindergarten last year and the entire process of dealing with the school system was new to us. The administration and teaching staff, alike, were easily accessible and always willing to help. There is a true sense of community among the families and staff and the principal, Mrs. Martin, is clearly invested in the school. I have been impressed by the fact that Mrs. Martin is present at all school events, knows the students (new or established) by name, and is always willing to talk to a parent, no matter how busy her day. My son had a difficult adjustment to Kindergarten. His teachers quickly noticed his struggle and collaborated closely with us and with the administration in identifying and rectifying the problem in a supportive manner that allowed him to fulfill his academic potential and enjoy his Kindergarten year. I highly recommend Sunset Park Elementary and give them a 5 star rating.

Sunset Park is a fantastic school. The teachers, staff members & principal are hands on with the children and the teaching techniques in our school. Parents also show dedication in their volunteer work. This school is very family oriented, the love that the teachers & staff show is beyond anyone's expectations. I highly recommend this hidden gem to any parent!

I'm really glad I found this school, I enrolled my daughter when a year ago when she was going to start the first grade, and to be honest since she started she has greatly improved academic wise, and social wise. The teachers know a lot, and they are great people and love the students. The principal, Mrs. Martin, is really nice with everyone, parents and students, she's really understanding and a wonderful person. My daughter loves the school, and every and every day when she gets home she starts talking about what an amazing day she had and everything that she learned, and how about she can't wait to go back the next day. I honestly am a proud parent of Sunset Park Elementary.
