This school has a leadership problem: the principal is also the Superintendent which means there is no system of checks and balances. The principal shuts down teachers who question a situation or differ with his opinion, and he has a very superior attitude towards anyone he percieves as challenging to his authority and deliberately misstates policies. The office is unwelcoming and unnecessarily unhelpful. There is a big yearly student and teacher turnover.

Our experience as parents has gone from "great" five years ago to "so so" now. Like anywhere, there are strengths and weaknesses. The big strengths are the really strong teachers in the K-2 grades and the music program. The small size of the school can be both a strength and a weakness. Small size can be a positive because smaller classrooms are more effective learning environments, but small size also means kids don't meet very many other kids and cliques among kinds and parents develop really fast. The main weaknesses are the instruction in the upper grades and the exclusivity of the Fieldbrook community (most kids here are out of district transfers but Fieldbrook families act like they own the school and booster club).

This is a small school with a great big heart. I'm so grateful to have my children attending Fieldbrook School. The curriculum isn't particularly innovative or exploratory, there are few opportunities for kids to play sports, and kids too often have the same teachers in consecutive years. BUT, kids are taught compassion and respect for their peers and teachers hand in hand with their reading, writing, and arithmetic; the homework expectation is reasonable; the parent foundation is wonderful; and older kids (grades 6-8) are really sweet to the little kids, which is an endearing component to the school's personality. Northern Humboldt's best K-8 school (at least for my kids)!

We visited several kindergartens seven years ago for our daughter and are so grateful we settled on Fieldbrook for her and for our son two years younger. The community, the size of the school, the dedication of the teachers and staff, the wisecracks in the office, the taking care of each other, and the skill and hard work of the teachers are outstanding. (We did an inter-district transfer.) The foundation, the booster club, the pushy parents and the receptive staff accomplish great things, including a strong music program, the trips including to Catalina Island at the other end of a very long state, and parent-taught short courses in May.

We chose Fieldbrook Elementary because of the small class sizes, attentive teachers, opportunities for parental involvement, better than average test scores, welcoming staff and approachable principal. We love Fieldbrook School. It is well supported and funded, with individualized attention and tons of learning experiences.

I was shocked to see all the awesome reviews for this school. The teachers are tired and don't commit themselves to the students. They lack motivation and are not up to par with teaching students what they need to know. Its nice that the school is small but lacking in education.
