It seems that in recent years, nearly all the public schools in Maricopa have made great strides. This starts at the district level with the superintendents. Teachers seem to be getting needed PD courses and schools are active in community involvement and inviting parents to be involved. The town has grown so quickly that city planners did not know what hit them in the early 2000s, and the planners were inexperienced. Now they look to experts that have experienced rapid growth and consultants are a great help. Kyrene, an exemplary AZ district, has gone through periods of rapid growth in the 60s-90s and is a great resource to base decisions upon. As the city grows in size we seem to be adding more experienced and qualified teachers as well. Unfortunately it is difficult to match salaries with the larger suburbs of Phoenix. Maricopa will have to update the salary schedule to keep positive growth happening. Working class towns like Maricopa often have the best schools because kids come from households that teach hard work and discipline, and value education. There is no doubt Maricopa High School has the opportunity to become the very best in the state.

I only went to MHS as a freshman, but I would still like to share my experience. This school is a tough school. There are fights at this school pretty much every day. Many of the rules aren't enforced, so it's really easy to get away with breaking the rules. There are a lot of students that will say the N-Word all the time. There are gun and bomb threats at least once per semester. There is a dress code in the student handbook, but it's not enforced, so you'll see kids at school wearing very skimpy clothes and then complain that the dress code is too strict because one security guard actually enforces the rules. This is also a school where students are "tolerant", but only if you agree with their values. Vaping is a huge issue at MHS, so avoid using the restroom before school and during lunch. This school is really spread out, so you might have to run to class, or you will get locked out of your classroom and have to get a pass from security. This school also has trouble finding teachers and some teachers expect you to teach yourself everything from a packet. The classes are also really short. 50 minutes (40 minutes on Wednesdays), is not enough time for a teacher to give their lecture. Participate in Honors/AP/Dual Enrollment classes as much as possible because they are smaller and less tedious. School guidance counselors take forever to respond to your emails. When they do, they make up their own excuses and rules for why you can't be in a class you wanted. If you are looking to graduate early, don't attend MUSD. It is extremely rare for MHS students to graduate early. You are not allowed to enroll in AP classes as a freshman, but you can enroll in dual enrollment classes. Be prepared to have to do a research project for a class and realize that the school Chromebooks are extremely locked down and most websites are blocked. Don't ride the school bus. The school buses are crowded and I have been bullied on the bus. Dismissal is a mess. Everyone I know who has driven on Honeycutt Ave during MHS dismissal can agree with that. This school does have some good things. It has a wonderful, award-winning music program. The CTE classes offer college credit and/or certification. The sports programs and spirit line are also very popular. If you don't participate in a particular program and are just looking for a good school, don't choose MHS. I wish you the best in making a good educational decision.

High School is what you make it! Too many kids blame their failures on someone else. I understand that it would be hard to get the number of teachers they need to drive all the way out here, so it would be hard to get the best teachers. But the teachers at this school really care!

Lack of organization, communication and instruction. When over 50% of freshman are failing???? This district needs to get it together. I have an honors student with A's and B's failing finals ( but still has all A's and B's). No text books to study... rarely see their turned in assignments to know where the messed up. And teachers giving assignments on things never taught, just to "see where the kids are at" and then counts those grades against them... cheer is a joke new drama or BS daily

Horrible school, lazy, unorganized, lack of communication, sad, poorly run, under funding, absolutely disgusting. Oh and very disappointing

I've had two daughters who attended this school , one who graduated and one in 10th grade . My daughter had an IEP which they never cared about and pushed me out of it but my daughter is doing excellent there now and I'm so glad . I wished they would change there IEP program cause it's horrible but other than that I think it's a good safe school .

I was a student here for four years, graduated in May of 2013. This, by far, was the worst school I'd been through. You have Fine Art majors teaching Science and Mathematics majors teaching English. The staff are incompetent and oblivious to situations. I was "sexually harassed" by a student of the same grade and opposite gender, a remark was made in the lunch line toward my friend, I told him to knock it off, all was overheard by security. For these situations, and fights, you have to have a mediation and quite literally discuss your feelings in an office with a counselor, an office secretary, and and security guard or student resource officer (local police officer). The teaching techniques are subpar in most cases and very "open your books to chapter thirteen and read, your homework will be the end of lesson quiz, due tomorrow." The teacher to student ratio is more like 24-28 to 1, according to friends' siblings that still holds true. Counselors do minimal amounts of counseling and prepping outside schedule alterations.Coming from a class of 333 students, we had about 10 who didn't graduate, and an additional handful who had a summer course but technically graduated with us. Where is the class of 2013 now? Several of them are college dropouts with a kid or two. Many are still working their Walmart and fast food jobs.
