Could not ask for a more caring and intentional school for my child.

The school is in transition with a new principal. I have had children there for the past 5 years. The teachers vary from great to poor, no matter their tenure. (Some new ones are fabulous while some there 5 years+ are not suited to middle school.) Middle Schools in general are a trying place given the hormones and social issues now made worse by social media. There are ample opportunity for involvement for students (the play, numerous clubs such as the award winning Model UN club and arts) and parents (HSA, school beautification., etc).

Maplewood Middle is a decent school that I feel, along with the rest of the district, is on the upswing. There were some rough years but the new principal is working to create a community of respect, caring and personal responsibility. Teachers have recently instituted programs to reward and incentivize students. There are a few truly great teachers, most others are fine, a few are poor. Even so, both my children received instruction that placed them on the honors track for the high school, which is extremely rigorous.. The guidance department is amazing and very responsive. If your child has problems and you advocate for him/her, you will usually get a caring response.

As a parent of this school for over 15 years, I can say I will not be sending my youngest here. It bothers me how inexperienced parents are giving this school a five star review when they never even knew the previous principal, they're children are in their first year and they don't even attend the school themselves. I don't either of course, but I did many years ago when I was a pre teen, and I can say, the school has taken a turn for the worst. As a matter of fact, the entire school district is falling apart.

With a brand new science wing for the students and teachers to enjoy and a new Principal, I have great hope for the future of MMS. My daughter loves this school and the friends she has made there. She adores her teachers who are smart, experienced, enthusiastic and passionate about their work. Every day the students are encouraged to visit their teachers after school if they have a problem with the work covered or homework set. In addition, the after-school clubs run by these teachers range from the amazing MMS play into as varied categories as fencing, adventurers club and more. MMS is a charming, but old, building so some of the corridors seem a little tired, but shouldn't reflect on the learning that goes on inside. In this diverse community the test scores mirror that economic and social diversity and do not necessarily demonstrate the overall capabilities of the school.
