When we moved to the neighborhood in 2019 we were excited to have a k5-5 neighborhood school. Unfortunately, the principal is a major issue. She is not very receptive to critique and seems to be fine sending a failing class of black 5th graders to Senate for 6th grade each year. Why aren't the black test scores improving when you have the kids from 5k-5? Very clearly the school is part of the problem. Seems to be a great school for blonde kids

I have had a bullied child barely get support from the school. Classes appear racially segregated. Appears to be a major leadership issue. Principal is not responsive. We sold our home to get closer to a better school.

My child has had an excellent experience at this school. It is a traditional elementary program in many respects. Good communication with staff. Good student ratios.

I love this district and I love this school. I have two children in this school who have very different strengths, needs, and personalities and they are both absolutely thriving in this environment. There are thoughtful, age appropriate, and consistent expectations for behavior, there are effective strategies to meet children at their academic level within a classroom (look up "What I Need" program), and every staff member I have met is friendly, supportive, and caring towards parents and students.

Elvehjem is a wonderful school. Teachers blend up-to-date teaching techniques with old-school chalk and blackboard, and really care about their kids. The parent community, volunteers and PTO are a real strength. Elvehjem has one of the biggest school libraries in the district and reading is suitably stressed, not to mention having a gorgeous school garden and strong art/music teachers. Having had kids in this school for ten years, I can honestly say I'd send them there all over again if I could.

My daughter is attending 4K here. Very nice school, lovely playgrounds and nice grounded kids. Only rated it as average because I feel that the teachers could use more resources but this is not uncommon in Madison schools.
