Walgrove has been A Game-Changing School Experience for us!I'm excited to share our incredible journey with Walgrove Elementary! After a tumultuous experience at our previous school, we were skeptical about finding a new community that would truly support my child's growth. But I am so glad we made the switch! From the moment we stepped foot on campus, we felt a sense of belonging. The administration, teachers, and staff at Walgrove are not only knowledgeable and dedicated, but you can really feel that they care about each student's well-being. My child, who had struggled with anxiety and self-doubt at their previous school, has blossomed into a confident, happy, and engaged learner. What truly sets Walgrove apart is its family-oriented atmosphere. The school encourages parent involvement, hosts regular events, and fosters a sense of community that's hard to find elsewhere. We've made fast friends with fellow parents, and our child has formed meaningful connections with their classmates. In short, Walgrove has been a game-changer for our family. We're grateful for the warm welcome, the supportive environment, and the incredible staff who have helped our child thrive. Our only regret is that we can't stay longer. If you're looking for a school that puts students first, look no further than Walgrove!

Walgrove is a truly special school and community. My daughter has been nurtured, challenged, and given room to discover herself and her interests while at Walgrove. The most important thing an elementary school can do for a child is teach them new things while preserving their innate curiosity and natural love of learning. School can teach children that learning is boring, or it can show them that learning is a true joy—and Walgrove is a prime example of a school that does the latter. My daughter has been academically challenged and is well prepared to move on to middle school next year, but more than that, she’s learned a lot about herself, her passions and talents, and what she’s capable of. These are things that don’t show up on a standardized test yet are no less important! The wonderful teachers and staff and the incredible active parent community are the icing on the cake. If you’re looking for the perfect spot for your child to learn, grow, and spread their wings, Walgrove is it.

This is our local public school and we almost didn’t go because of the low scores - that would have been a huge mistake. Walgrove is a truly remarkable little school! The community is incredible. I feel joy every morning as I walk my kids to school with our neighbors and wave to all the other families. I never imagined the sense of peace that would come from being part of a true school community and having my children surrounded by other kids and adults that know them so well. We were already close to our neighbors, but going to Walgrove has made living in Mar Vista feel like an extra tight neighborhood. Beyond the really special social aspects, the academics have been great. Because it’s so small, the teachers and principal are very accommodating of meeting kids at their level and supporting their strengths/interests. It really feels like a dreamy sweet little school - it’s hard to believe it’s LAUSD. The scores are problematic for reasons other reviewers have described, but beyond that, it’s hard to put into numerical metrics what a warm, grounded, creative, and supportive gem of school Walgrove really is.

The Teachers and the families at Walgrove create a wonderful community. Teachers care deeply about their students and it’s obvious that they love their profession.Families are a very fun and welcoming group who are invested in making the school better in every way they can.I have never seen a public school with a STEAM art studio like Walgrove’s. It is a place where creativity thrives, and creative ideas are nurtured. I implore you to come check out the edible garden where students discover their love of fruits and vegetables that they themselves have grown! Among the colorful blooms of California native plants in the Wildlands, students learn about native plants and animals and explore their relationship to the earth.Academics at the school are strong and teachers are thoughtful in their lessons. The Standardized test scores do not accurately reflect the rigorous academic work that is happening at Walgrove

I IMPLORE you to tour Walgrove! It's the best gem on the Westside. Small, inclusive, massive green acreage and a living farm. Like theatre and arts?! We have that too. It's also important that we call out the elephant in the room about our appalling Great Schools score and WHY our school is proudly the recipient of their low scores. Walgrove is exceptionally neurodiverse. 1/3 of the school receives special services and a majority of those kid's test scores count into our cumulative school score. In addition, within that 1/3 contain a robust segment of low-income and "disadvantaged groups" (GS term) which gives us a low "Equity" score. Equity is determined by how "advantaged" students perform against "disadvantaged" students. It's not a fair assessment with a school that has a high amount of atypical learners many of whom are low-income. The areas that make our school so beloved and our community so strong, it's ethnic, income and neuro diversity, are what bring our score down. Parents and school leaders have spoken to Great Schools about methods to improve the score optics through special education accreditations, etc. Sadly for our amazing school, we're a perfect storm for a low Great Schools score. But fortunately for us, the families that choose to send their kids there despite the optics have created a remarkable community where kids learn and thrive in academics and as thoughtful future leaders.

Absolutely! Here's a positive review for Walgrove Elementary School:---Walgrove Elementary School is an exceptional neighborhood gem that goes above and beyond in providing a well-rounded education for its students. Nestled in a vibrant community, Walgrove offers a unique blend of academic excellence and creative exploration that truly sets it apart. One of the standout features of Walgrove is its amazing outdoor garden - The Wildlands. This hands-on learning environment allows students to connect with nature, learn about sustainability, and experience the joy of growing their own food. It's a place where science lessons come to life, and students develop a deep appreciation for the environment. In addition to their strong academic curriculum, Walgrove excels in the arts. With drama and tap dancing programs, students are encouraged to explore their creativity and express themselves through performance. The school's STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) lab is another highlight. Here, students engage in exciting, hands-on experiments and projects that integrate multiple disciplines. It's a space where innovation thrives, and young minds are inspired to think critically and problem-solve.What truly sets Walgrove apart is its dedicated staff, including a resident farmer who enriches the curriculum with lessons on plants and outdoor learning. This unique addition not only teaches students about where their food comes from but also instills a sense of responsibility and respect for the environment.Walgrove Elementary School is more than just a place of learning; it's a community where students are encouraged to explore their passions, foster their talents, and grow into well-rounded individuals. For any family looking for a nurturing environment that values both academic and personal development, Walgrove is an excellent choice.

We've been at Walgrove for 2 years and couldn't be more pleased with every aspect of the school. The families that make up the Walgrove community are beyond special - it's such a connected, supportive, inspiring group of people. The teachers and our principal, Dr K are just phenomenal and so caring and tuned into. The school is much smaller than other public schools in the area and it really makes a huge difference. Parent and community involvement are really exceptional. We've found some of the best friends here and have never felt more at home at any other school. And our son is thriving. We can't wait to send our younger daughter here in one more year.

What a school!!! As a parent of a child at Walgrove for three years, I can confidently say it’s an extraordinary place for children to grow and thrive. The teachers are amazing, going above and beyond to support both the academic and emotional wellness of each student. The sense of community is warm and welcoming, making everyone feel like part of an extended family. The school's garden and playing area are unbelievable and ginormous, offering endless opportunities for exploration and play. It’s a paradise for children, beautifully maintained and cared. They have chickens and 2 lovely coops! The children are crazy for them <3The principal's commitment to knowing every single child by name speaks volumes about the personalized care and attention each student receives. Every complaint I had was heard and addressed promptly. Even when my child has something to discuss with the principal, she writes directly to her and gets the most respectful, thoughtful, and truly sensitive responses. This special place cherishes childhood in the most wonderful way, and I am incredibly grateful for the positive impact it has had on my child and our family.

My daughter attended Walgrove from 2nd to 5th grade. It is not our neighborhood school, but rather my school of choice for her. I am teacher of 18 years and couldn’t be happier that I found this amazing public school for my daughter here in Los Angeles. The parent association brings so much enrichment to the school as well as builds an incredibly strong school community. I feel so lucky to have had a public school that in my experienced opinion far outshines any private school in the area. My daughter graduates elementary in a few days and we will miss Walgrove and the community!

We joined Walgrove in the middle of the school year for my daughter. Not only were we welcomed by the class and administration but the entire community. This is such a gem and this special community is exactly the type of place for a student to grow not just academically but as a whole person.

We couldn’t be happier with this elementary school! The faculty is outstanding—knowledgeable, caring, and always willing to go the extra mile for their students. The campus is beautiful and well-maintained, providing a safe and inspiring environment for learning. Most importantly, the school is incredibly supportive of children with special needs, offering tailored resources and personalized attention to ensure every child thrives. Highly recommend! Don't let the Great School score dissuade you. Not all qualities of this school can be simply represented in a data point. You'll have to judge it for yourself but we love it. One third of the student population of the school is special needs, one third is gifted and talented and the other third is general education. Great parent involvement in so many of the events, shows and musical. Just great!

We have had such an incredible experience with Walgrove. The Great School rating is a total farce. Every teacher has been phenomenal. The acres of land and integrated outdoor learning is transformative for the kids. Learning architecture from building a chicken coop and science while their hands are in the ground. Both of my kids love STEAM studio art classes and participated in musical theater. A total gem of a school.

We switch to Walgrove after having a terrible time at Mar Vista having them accommodate our sons IEP. The teachers and staff of Walgrove have gone above and beyond for my child. When we started at Walgrove my son was in the third grade and according to Mar Vista testing at a low kindergarten level. This year my son is in the fifth grade and caught up to grade level. I cry at every parent teacher conference because of the leaps and bounds my son has made. He maybe a special case but switching to Walgrove has been the best decisions I could have ever made for my son.

We are so happy at this school! This is our neighborhood school and we are so grateful for this beautiful community. This is our 5th year with all 3 of our kids now in attendance. The teachers are tuned in to each of the kids and the principal is engaged in all things and always available to take quick action. We have wonderful enrichment programs and a robust special needs program. I would recommend this school to everyone. The low score is very alarming and doesn’t reflect the sentiment of the schools families.

Walgrove is a wonderful community focused school that excels in art, theater and social-emotional learning. From the gardens to classrooms to the musicals, our children have thrived and excelled. Everyone loves going to school at Walgrove, not least the strong parent groups and engaged local community.

We got so lucky to find this school and this community when we relocated to LA. Both of my kids have thrived here, socially and academically, and we have all made lifelong friends.

Walgrove Elementary School is a wonderful place for your child to be at! The atmosphere is not only one of learning, but of fun and laughter as well. My experience as a Volunteer Grandmother, has allowed me to see how well the school is run by Dr. K. She is outstanding with being available and participating in daily activities ! The school is known for teaching children with special needs and disabilities in their own dedicated classrooms. The teachers are very attentive to each child's needs and focus on the areas of learning that need more attention. Their creative energy can be seen through the projects and lessons they plan. The school body may not be large, but the campus covers eleven acres! There is plenty of room for the children to run and play at recess and physical education class. Not only are there ball courts, but two lovely gardens. A vegetable garden and the Wild lands Garden. The children learn about growing and caring for plants from an onsite gardener. They also learn about raising chickens that live in the gardens and lay eggs in the hen house. There are theater, craft and music classes that can be joined by those students who are drawn to them. Various special events are arranged by all of the students for the parents and guests. Parent participation in any area is welcomed! Volunteering at the school library has given me a hands-on experience of seeing how much these children love books! Helping to monitor the playgrounds and lunchtimes, has shown me how happy the children are here. With the concern for security measures and the wellbeing of every child, Walgrove excels!

SUCH A WONDERFUL COMMUNITY!!! This is our second year at Walgrove Elementary and I've been consistently and repeatedly impressed by the dedication of the Principal Dr. Kittelson, the Friends of Walgrove parent board, and the parent community as a whole - plus the incredible teachers! Having completed TK during 2021-2022 which was very much a COVID year with masking, distancing, and a lot of restrictions, it's been so refreshing to enter school this 2022-2023 school year with no masks and a strong commitment to "returning to normal" (whatever that is!) with safety and progress in mind. Now, I realize that the score for this school might be strange for such a great school so I want every reader to know that Walgrove's Greatschools scores are skewed due to our incredible Special Education program. We have one of the most robust special education programs in LAUSD and that affects the overall testing score - but that score shouldn't deter you from this wonderful school. At just over 220 children, this school feels small and intimate and works incredibly hard to build community with new families and the Venice/Mar Vista community. The Friends of Walgrove board is highly active, raising $200K+ for students every year through a variety of local and family-based fundraising activities like parties, dining out events, and children's events. If you're looking for a great public school that truly speaks to the vibe of Venice life, this is it! Come here and be blown away by the commitment, passion, and experience of the teachers, the Principal, and all of the special programs like the STEAM room for math and science, the art room with Ms. Francesca, the robust theatre program (which did The Lion King last year and was amazing!) and more! Lastly, it's important to talk about the space at Walgrove! At nearly 10 acres of land, it's one of the largest school properties in LAUSD and we make great use of it with our staff gardener, CHICKENS (!), a huge garden area where the kids can plant, cultivate and watch veggies and fruits grow, and let's not forget the Wildlands, our vast open space filled with native plants that makes a perfect space for children to explore safely during recess and some classes even host their classes outdoors! This school is amazing and I hope you'll consider a tour to see what Walgrove is all about!

We are so lucky to have this great school in our neighborhood. In addition to an incredible campus (the largest I know of on the Westside, public or private), an incredible Principal, caring and creative teachers, awesome programs (the BEST theater program! Plus violin, gardening, STEAM, etc), the COMMUNITY is awesome. I’ve made lots of friends and really feel like we are part of something bigger. I recommend this magical place without hesitation.

We toured numerous schools both private and public before choosing Walgrove. The campus is wonderful - almost 10 acres! If outdoor space/learning is important to you be sure to go on a tour. The school edible garden and wildlands (including chickens) is unlike any other campus in the area. The welcoming community of parents, kids, teachers & staff has been a pleasant surprise. Walgrove has a large special needs program that influences the "great schools" algorithm - don't let the faulty algorithm fool you. Go on a tour, meet the principal and see for yourself the amazing school that Walgrove Ave Elementary is.
