Our experience with Ogden reflects both its strengths and areas needing improvement. The school appears influenced by District 102’s incentive structure, which prioritizes diversity and equity over academic achievement.Strengths:The resources for students with developmental challenges are exceptional. My children who need additional support benefit from psychologists, special education teachers, and therapists. Instructionally, there’s little more they could require. Areas for Improvement: 1. Advanced Programs: My advanced children find the curriculum lacking. When ahead of their peers, they’re often left with little to do and resort to unproductive computer time. More engaging and challenging activities would better serve their needs.2. Bullying: Bullying during recess is a persistent issue. Despite reporting incidents where my children on the spectrum came home with bruises or black eyes, the school’s efforts to address this have been largely ineffective.3. Equity vs. Excellence: While the school’s commitment to equity is notable, academic achievement seems secondary. Declining test scores contrast with accolades focused on diversity metrics. Additionally, my sons report feeling undervalued as boys in the classroom.4. Extracurricular Opportunities: There’s a noticeable lack of academic extracurriculars like math or science clubs or a science Olympiad team. These programs would provide essential outlets for high-performing students.Recommendations:The school would benefit from a stronger emphasis on academic success, including stimulating programs for advanced learners, effective anti-bullying measures, and STEM-focused extracurriculars. A balance between equity and excellence is critical to better serve all students.

My school uses so many worksheets that are just busy work for the 2nd graders. Piles of paper come home each week, unimaginative, repetitive, and simplistic. Worksheets for simple addition when it has been mastered in 1st? Authentic writing samples are rare at best. Please more effort to have students be creative thinkers and stop killing trees!

Excellent School, Excellent Parent /School Involvement. We lived in Brookfield, IL. for 7 years where the schools are also solid, moved to the neighborhood 3 years ago in fall 2010 after 2 kids and a dog. The school system is Great, Teachers are Great, We are very happy so far, our daughter is in kindergarten and our son in 2nd grade. They Also offer a great after school program by the park district. We are very happy with Ogden Ave. school. The teachers genuinely care about their students. The academics are strong and meet the needs of all students. Most importantly the families have great morals and values! I have an 11yr old girl and 9 yr old boy, both are happy with their school, teachers and friends! Keep up the good work Odgen!
