My concern with this school is the theatre program. In the past 4 years, I watched the same kids (even read their names in the playbills) over and over again. The students all knew it and those that truly wanted to get somewhere in theatre went to venues where they could get a fair audition, training, and opportunity to perform. So that my review is crystal clear, in this public high school only certain kids are landing the majority of leading roles in the 2 plays performed annually. If a student happens to land a leading role and they did not have one in the year prior, that is considered "taking a chance" on that student. Shame on this outfit for establishing norms of risk rather than celebrating opportunities for success. Each play should be fortified with a lineup of newcomers so that there is ample opportunity for all talent levels to participate.

Both my children have graduated from West and went on to receive full ride scholarships at top notch out of state colleges. We were extremely happy with the caliber of classes offered, the extracurricular options, sports and especially the caring and astute teachers. My kids have stayed in touch with their classmates and will be friends for life. This institution allowed my children to become the best they could be, challenged them with learning how to apply themselves, and work cohesively with other students, all with rich and varied diverse backgrounds. We couldn't be happier with their high school education. You will get out of it what you put into it.

I repeatedly hear about fights that break out. Kids are out of control. What you see/hear just at pick up is appalling. We will be moving in order to get in to a different school next year.

What makes West so special? First, it's the most diverse school in Knoxville. Students have friends from other cultures, other races, other social classes. It makes them more tolerant and better able to understand the real world, not the "white" student body that most Knoxville schools have. Second, West is the only IB school in Knoxville, and it's first cohort had a higher proportion earning their IB diploma than the state average. Third, we have great parent involvement which has contributed to several major renovations, including a new state-of-the-art lecture hall. And, most importantly, West has the best teachers!
