I truly believe Poe was a good school at one point. My parents and sister have lived in this neighborhood for over 25 years and a lot has changed. And if you have a child with any type of learning difference, please run; and, make sure that your future school can provide interventions.

We have very bad experience at POE elementary. My daughter teacher was unresponsible, careless teacher who refused to engage the family in student learning issues, and work behind our back to transfer my daughter to self-contained class. The school is terrible in terms of safety, there are a lot of bullying, and the dismissal procedures are very unsafe to the children.

The kids at this school are out of control- it seems like the administration at this school doesn’t have order in the school. My son is in fifth grade and is bullied to no end. He has gotten smacked across face, punched in the back, threatened to be jumped all by other 5th grade girls. At this point, I’ve instructed my kid to defend himself. But like how horrible, kids should go to school to learn not worry about their safety. Looks like this schools administration needs help keeping these kids in check.

My son is has been bullied by his peers. It's already the third time he reports problems with two colleagues. We've already sent an email to the teacher in charge. She never return the email. We decided to talk to her and she said she doesn't stay with the kids all the time, so it would have happened in one of those moments. My son attended a charter school last year, and the difference between them is HUGE. There is a lack of organization, a lack of active communication between the teacher and the parents, the room is tiny and crowded, it is not a suitable room for children as active as they are at that age, my son always comes back with food in his lunch box, he tells me there is no time to eat everything. The cafeteria menu is terrible, full of processed foods. And I only know this because my son tells me what's on the menu, because on the school page this information is outdated. I honestly don't understand how this school's grade is so good.

Traumatic experience for both teachers and educators this past year. They lost about 50% of the staff. Even the vice principal quit before the year was up and never came back. I had a good impression of this school before I realized that it’s all smoke and mirrors. I experienced racism, harassment, bullying and no support. The principal never responded to my emails even though one of those emails was informing about my cancer diagnosis.

Poor. Diverse pop, active PTO, excellent violin and art teachers. However, G/T students are often not challenged, the worst behaving students are not disciplined, causing a ripple effect. Parent concerns are swept under the rug. The bathrooms reek. Poor management and leadership.

My daughter started kindergarten at Poe this past year. She wakes up everyday excited to go to school. Her kindergarten teacher challenges the kids and has high expectations for behavior, but is also warm and responsive. Every child enrolled gets to participate in the fine arts program. My daughter especially loves dance, and I have been amazed at what the art teacher can get kindergartners to do. The school became an International Baccalaureate school this year, which encourages kids to be inquirers. The Principle Amerson is very dedicated, and the kids seem to love him. All the parents I've met volunteering have been great, and the PTO is very active. The school is diverse. There are multiple nationalities/ethnicity represented in my daughter's class. We're very happy at this school. Literally our only complaint is the food is terrible. But that is more of an HISD overall problem. Just plan to send your kids lunch.

As an involved grandparent with 45 years in education, with teaching experience in pre-school, elementary, middle and high school as well as college, I am very impressed with everything about Poe Elementary. Students receive attention to their individual academic, social and physical needs from the staff in the front office, the teachers and the principal. This give each student the opportunity to reach their potential

I have 3 girls that attend Poe and we absolutely love it! We had friends that opted for private school but Poe is such a great public school in the heart of Boulevard Oaks that we were compelled to support it. All of our teachers have been fabulous and my children have been academically challenged. The school is rich with culture and diversity. It's a Fine Arts magnet with a top program but my girls have also been learning advanced math and science. The PTO is strong and we have great parents. I could go on and on about our school but you will have to experience it for yourself. Go Poe Ravens!

Poe is a warm and welcoming school with committed teachers, ambitious arts performances and programs, and engaged students who emerge equally confident of their ability to both replicate the style of Van Gogh in a line drawing, and ace the next math or spelling test. As the transformation to IB gets into full swing next year, this school is only going to get better - when my youngest goes to junior high my family will have spent 12 years in this wonderful community, a really magical place buried in the heart of one of the best neighborhoods in Houston!

We'll be graduating from Poe after 5 great years at this small town feeling magnet school. My kids scored very high for Lanier Vanguard and we feel very prepared for the rigorsof middles school. The fine arts programs are amazing, mine will take their 5 years of suzuki violin under Debbie Elafros on to middle school orchestra, our Poe Dancers taught by Traci Prince Greene are fabulous, and the track coach Linda Suttles also coaches Lanier Track. Our principal Jeff Amerson knows kids by name, eats with them in the cafeteria and is totally committed to their welfare and being partners with teachers and parents. Our PTO is incredible and committed, and our teachers are strong and love our kids. IB will be a great addition to our academic process.

This is my 5th year at Poe Elementary and love our experience and this wonderfully diverse and welcoming school. I have two very different children who attend the school - one who is in the Gifted and Talented Program, one with Special Needs. I truly believe that they are both getting what they need in an elementary education. They are both supported, challenged and cared for each and every day. The teachers are creative and go beyond "teaching to the tests." Our family LOVES Poe Elementary!

We are in our 7th year at Poe and absolutely LOVE our neighborhood school! We have a strong Principal and teaching staff, strong parental involvement with the PTO, and a diverse population in a beautiful historic building in the heart of the prettiest section of Houston! My children have been challenged academically and benefited from the fine arts curriculum. And I'm very excited about our school implementing the IB program. Check out the PTO website www.poepto.org to learn about some of the unique experiences our children are exposed to (ie, Fine Arts Career Week, All Art Day, etc).
