Overall its a wonderful school district. Like any other small town/district it has its issues, which mostly stems from the mentality of the parents and not the school district itself.

My child went to HES for 4.5 years before I pulled him out. First, the leadership at the school is a joke, there is no leadership. This is a less than mediocre school. My child was being physically bullied to the point being choked and the principal did nothing. The superintendent is never around to answer phone calls or follow through. Most of the staff treat the students poorly including the lunch monitors that also bully the children. My child did not feel safe at this school and he didn't feel that he was protected by the staff either. Now there are FEW good teachers in this school, but sadly they aren't enough to turn this school around. Let the declining test scores and ratings be enough to tell you that the children at this school deserve better. Dont pay the outlandish amount in taxes to send your child to a poor school, glad we moved.

HES has many caring and supportive individuals on their team (teachers, school staff, those in leadership, PTA, and bus drivers). My child is doing well academically and socially. My child and I feel welcomed in the school, treated with respect and kindness. Great experience overall.

I'm shocked to learn our school only ranks a 5! The staff and teachers are all so welcoming and truly concerned about each student. Our son transitioned in from out of state beautifully, due to the teachers and staff. He knew, and was known, by many of the teachers and staff right away. Although the school building is old, most are in this part of the northeast. There is a newer addition and all of the classrooms I have been in are warm and inviting. In three years we have not had a bad experience with any teachers or staff. My son also receives special services, which they have gone above and beyond. Improvement areas might include updating building and technology. Although they are in the middle a a large capital campaign to do just that. Obviously we need to raise our score!

My child has had some very good, caring, competent teachers. However, I think this school and the district as a whole lacks quality leadership. There is little consistencey in policy and procedures among grade levels and it seems like administration does little to oversee what goes on in the classrooms. The school seems to be behind in the implementation of technology and current pedagology and theory of best practice in education. However, there are some outstanding teachers who take it upon themselves to excel in these areas. My child was fortunate to have a few of them. I did not feel involved in anything other than being invited to parties and performances.
