My child joined the Fairview community February 2020 just weeks prior to Covid. The pandemic was a difficult transition not just for my then second grader but for the educator as well. The virtual academic environment was often hostile and led with frustration and disorganization. My student got to the point of crying every morning and exhibiting anxious behaviors knowing that learning hours were approaching. Since school has returned to in person the schools leadership has proven to be unstable with at least three changes amongst principals and assistant principals. Students are not held accountable for their violent and aggressive behaviors. Teachers and staff are insensitive and disrespectful. There is a disconnect between administration, staff, and parents. The students behavior and conduct are completely out of control and the only measure of discipline and restorative action is simply a verbal apology. My student has fallen behind academically and despite receiving additional services beyond campus they struggle with exceeding expectations while testing and reflecting curriculum. The sole highlight of the schools community is the art department Ms. Dixon has been the most consistent and positive outlet for the students throughout my experience with Fairview. I also appreciate the social emotional supports provided through community partners.

I am completely fed up with this school and school district. My son started kindergarten and has never had a consistent teacher. I have not been had a teachers conference, or any notice about how well my child is doing in school. They cannot keep a principal. My son has come home and told me about fights he has gotten into at school and I have never been notified by a staff member that there was an issue. Although, if he tells me the day it happens, and I do call the office, they seem to know what's going on. I will say I'm his mother and they will immediately transfer me to the principal. The school district is reactionary. I understand that right now we're are still in a pandemic, however, being in this for more than two years one would think they would have made clear guidelines and policies for parents and teachers. That is absolutely not the case. If you can send your child to private schools please do. Hayward schools and school district are not worth the tax dollars.

Example: Leadership is making a leader out of you and me. Thank you Fairview Elementary for adopting me, too.

This is the school where kids go to watch tv. They have a smart board in every classroom and that’s what they use them for. When I drop off and pick up my daughter, the kids are sitting on the floor watching Peppa Pig. When you walk by the other classrooms or the library, you can see the same thing is happening. I picked her up one day and asked her what she did that day and she said they watched a Curious George movie. One time I arrived early to pick her up and hung outside waiting for her class to be dismissed. The class next door had Peppa Pig on for 30 minutes. School isn’t a place to watch cartoons. Some positives about the school are that the principal is very kind and involved. The interior of the school is nice and new. But you can’t have a Title 1 school where the students desperately need the most learning and face-to-face interaction with their peers and teachers and waste that time putting them in front of cartoons. I asked my friends and family members if their kids watch cartoons in school and they said it doesn’t happen - that the kids might watch an educational video but never Peppa Pig. I have two family members who are teachers and they said it shouldn’t be happening. I am considering private school instead.

Yes, Fairview has a GreatSchools rating of two. That's based on the test scores and proficiency, and sadly with almost 80% of the school population classified as low-income, the parent-child and parent-teacher relationship that makes for a successful student is greatly compromised. Therefore, it's fair to say that the two-star rating does not mean the school set children up for failure, it's mostly circumstantial. Our son has been attending here since 1st grade and so far, we've seen a proactive campus - Mr. Melvin is helpful, involved, quick to resolve issues, and open (and who admittedly has a lot on his plate, with the school's preconceived reputation and trying his darnest to turn things around); the majority of teachers (at least our experiences in 1st-3rd grade) are all for their kids and are super involved; the volunteers (mostly parents/grandparents) are splendid and passionate. The PTA is in its infancy, but is also made up of folks who want to instigate positive change and community involvement. So yes, on the outside the school is nice and new, some of the parents during drop-offs/pick-ups are of questionable character/parental quality who leave a lousy taste in your mouth, but at its core, Fairview ES is run well, has motivated staff, growing but strong PTA, pretty good funding, the deaf program is spot on, AM/PM YEP aftercare is great (and cheap). If this keeps up, it's only a matter of time before the scores pick up, which apparently what most people care about, even though all schools are on Common Core now, which is standardized throughout the nation, i.e. no one learns more or less than the other.

Fairview School does not know much about discipline and how to handle children in the class room. They need more training on child psychology. They need to learn and understand the mentality of a child. They need to challenge to achieve for the better instead of pushing them to the back and leave them for failure. I am disappointed in the way children are being handled in bully situations and the communication between the staff and the principle. It seem like they are more worried about their jobs then the well being of the education of the child.

This was my first year at Fairview and it was a little difficult in the beginning. I had just had a baby and was unable to be involved with my child's education. But after a few weeks I got to meet her teacher and the new principle. Work with the teacher and communicating daily with here. My husband and I help the best we can in the class or in the school had made this a great school year. Parents need to be involved in help mold our children. My daughter did great and ended the year on a good note.;)

Here is was I DID like about the School 1. Brand New School 2. YEP program Here is What every Parent Should KNOW and What I DID NOT like about the school: My child was going to Fairview for 1st Grade, however, in the last month of school we moved so I had to move my child to another school. Through out the whole year my child Report card will come home as she is A+ student, Excellent in reading, Multiple certificates in Math. My child even received a certificate of student of the YEAR. Every time I will ask the teacher how is my child, The teacher will always claim my Child is one of the classroom's top student. (Tell me which parent on earth does NOT like hearing that about their Child). When I moved my child to another School District I WAS SHOCKED, they had my child take test to determine my child academic level.... ONLY TO FIND OUT My child is reading 37 words in a min, when she is supposed to be reading 53 words WHICH MAKES ME HIGHLY BELIEVE Fairview Elementary Misleads Parents, Does not give correct Report Cards, makes Student Academic level DROP AS for that this is a horrible school

One of the best TK teachers is at this school. Ms. McKenna has been so wonderful with her students, and my daughter is very very very lucky to have Ms. McKenna. She has blossomed tremendously under her tutelage which is academic-driven, so I feel confident that my daughter will take on kindergarten with such confidence. I wish my daughter could continue to have Ms. McKenna as her kindergarten teacher - that would definitely be a reason for me to apply for intradistrict transfer, but alas, my daughter has to go back to her home school next year. Any transitional kindergartner who has Ms. McKenna is very lucky! And I love the "Made in Hayward" campaign and the "Fairview Pledge" - it tells me that this school is on the right track!

I am not happy about this school. There is a new principal, so I am not sure how improved the school will be in the coming years. My biggest concerns about this school are: street safety, bullying, and communication. 1st- street safety. There is NO safety at all when you drop off your child. I have seen frequently how close kids got to get run over, including my own children, in the mornings. There are no crossing guards on D st and Maud. Even when I drop off the children in the front driveway, the teacher would not come out to hold up "stop" - she would only do it for kids crossing from the 2nd driveway, so my kids got almost run over. 2nd - my kid has been bullied repeatedly, and I had reported. No one has informed me about physical assault on my child, and I had to take my child to the doctor to get the wound checked on. 3rd - see the 2nd reason. Communication is dismal! At end of this school year, I'm pulling my child out and enrolling at another school.
