My special needs child was often excluded from field trips and class activities because of fear of behavior that would be caused by his disability. Instead of providing him with a 1:1 aide that can handle him, he was made to stay behind at school while the rest of his class went of the field trip. When i confronted the principal about the unfair treatment against a child with special needs, she became belligerent and accused me of disrespecting her even though I had witnesses with me and heard the conversation on speaker phone. Then they hired a private investigator to follow us around and accused us of living in a different district because my child spent the night with my mother while I attended a business trip. Needless to say, they need extra help in the special needs department. I wonder how many other special needs kids and their parents have been treated this way. Office staff is extremely rude every time I call to ask a question. Will not be continuing my child's education at this school, special needs families: beware!

This is my child's first year at Hayden Elementary. The teachers are dedicated and had open communication with me all year. My only complaint is the play ground is unusable. The equipment looks new but the ground underneath is unstable so the children can't play on it. It has been unusable for two years now and still no work has begun to repair it. I find this unacceptable. I'm not sure if it's the PTO or the Blount County School system that is failing.

Hayden Elementary is a great school! We love our students and strive hard to teach the whole child. We focus on academics, especially reading and math. We are an Alabama Reading Initiative School (ARI) and Alabama Math, Science & Technology School (AMSTI). Our teachers are all highly qualified and passionate about making learning fun. We want to make school something to look forward to everyday. Our community provides a great deal of support, especially the volunteers that work here on a daily basis. We welcome parents for a variety of special events, and they are always encouraged to eat lunch or breakfast with their child. As principal, I am always available to meet with you regarding your child. I have an open-door policy, and you can reach me by e-mail or phone. We have an incredible school, and I welcome you to come visit and see for yourself the great things that are happening here!

My only complaint is that I wish there were art, music, and foreign language teachers!

I have 3 children that attend Hayden schools.2 are in gifted programs.1child graduated-1 attended the elem, jr. high &now high school. 3rd has attended the primary & elem school. I can say that the Primary, Jr. High &High Schools are good schools with great staff-mostly-As anywhere, there are exceptions. The Elem school may not be for regular people unless you are in. Some staff won't give you the time of day. if you are not in -your child could be overlooked & ignored. I have spoken with several parents about this issue & many outsiders agree that the elem principal is impossible to get in touch with & she is unfriendly &gives off a attitude. Observing, she doesn't seem to like kids or respect teachers or parents -except the ins - In 4 years and 2 kids there, I have never been able to speak to her -someone intercepts.
