I'm a member of the class of 70. So this review covers that period (1965-1970). I was a fairly quiet student but enjoyed my time at Gavit. Extremely sad to see it close, and feel it's important to set up an organization that will keep the name of "Donald E Gavit" alive. As with most students, I had problems, but looking back, 99% of those problems were caused by myself. But, I never complained and worked through those problems. I can't remember one teacher that I disliked. I had a great time and learned to respect this country, honor our flag, and support the United States military. I went on to serve this great country for over 20 years, and I thank Gavit High School for preparing me for that experience. One more thing, we had the greatest school song of all time. I will never forget those words, "...for to the Purple and the Gold, I will evermore be true".

I graduated Gavit in 1970. My experience was very positive. The teachers were excellent. I continued my education obtaining degrees in law enforcement and later emergency medical services. I am so sorry to see that the school has apparently declined so much. I also was sad to learn the school will be closing. My 50 year reunion was postponed a year due to COVID-19. The information I've read on this page has made me very, very sad.

I am a parent of two children that attends gavit for three years. One child is in 6th grade the other 8, and it has been problems since thing. I feel the need ti understand the need for good teachers, good schools is a joke now, for some teachers i feel that they are just there to pick up a pay check. And if this is the standard s that we set for our schools, then there would be no change for the best, now or for the future. It frustrating to now that the teachers of this school dont look for the best interests for the children.

Excellent. The teachers and staff are amazing. It is not that crowded if you arrive early. The students are kind and not bad like other schools. I recommend Gavit.

Over crowded school !! The teachers need to set a example for these pre teenagers if the teachers act like this how can they set example for these students ?? Principal as well?? They just think its a job and a pay check but those fields also require patients and caring and understanding and showing a example and these teachers and principle do not no how to do that! Unreal Poor structure Poor attitude as well

No Structure, Over crowded Futhermore, while we are praying for our children we need to pray for the teachers thats teaching them. I do not recommend anyone send their child here. After they receive the funding for your child at the end of Oct. they nolonger care!

I'm 27 almost 28 yr olds I graduted hs in 05 I went to gavit for 8th grade well I can't say I am pleased with girls gym teacher or the 8th grade math teacher I the yr before I went to truly awful school that didn't give rats behind 2 teachers in whole school cared no one else did in previous school . Many of 8th grade teachers at gavit did try to do the right thing. Yeah the principals and assiant principals don't know whats going on really in school as big as that I'm not suprised I think schools problem is it's to big for own good. Ps the school that didn't care had half as many students if even half as many students as gavit. They do ok for ridclously huge school.

This school is a trap for teenagers, with carless teachers and low quality information. There is no control in most classrooms and the teachers act like children sometimes as well. It is not a good school, but better than nothing. It needs a major makeover.

Gavit school needs to communicate with parents not only about bad behavior but when they're grades drop or go up.

I have attended Gavit since the 6th grade, and I will graduate this year. I took 2 AP classes last year and 5 this year. I have always loved being here, even when I didn't agree with the choices made by the administration. If anything, people should know that the problem at this school is NOT the teachers. The problem isn't even the administrators. The problem is the lack of parental concern. A lot of parents at this school either blame EVERYONE ELSE or don't care what their child does. Overall, GREAT SCHOOL!

I went to this school for 6th grade all the way to 9th grade and I have to say that its a very good school. I know attend Lowell high school and am about to graduate shortly. I hold the teachers at gavit high school for getting me where I am today. I know what I know from them. I wish I could go back one day and say thank you.

I moved away from Hammond due to the schools. My daughter went to Gavit for 6th through 8th and my son went for most of 6th. The school has to focus more on discipline than they can on education. Drugs were being sold right at the front door (per my kids), they need to worry about gangs and fighting all the time. There are some great teachers in the school but unfortunately that didn't help. Pulling my kids out was the best thing I've ever done for them.

As a student of Gavit high school I have to say that its not as bad as people make of it. I understand that some schools may not get the money they need to do certain things but people make it sound like our school is going to fall apart. I have been at Gavit since 6th grade and I love it. I love the school spirit and the teachers are helpful and kind if you give them the same respects you would like to have. && A lot of things are starting to change like having summer school online and credit recovery.
