Great teachers, involved families, solid administration, and progressive culture that finds the right balance between academics and non-academic education

The children of the Byrd School are intelligent and highly motivated, as are their parents. The school would definitely step up to another level of excellence if there were more transparency and input to processes like Teacher Evaluation, Gifted Programs and opportunities to improve areas outside of the basic curriculum. The shared goal of excellence for our children can go even further than it does right now if there was an open dialog and input from all stakeholders!

Academically the curriculum is rigorous. Most of the teachers are dedicated. Great kindergarten, music, 2nd grade, reading teachers. Fabulous resource room teacher. However, Byrd falls short socially. Their anti-bullying program is weak. Parent/student handbook policies not enforced. Students are supervised at recess by only 2 or 3 "lunch aides" who are well meaning but overwhelmed. Principal (or teachers) NEVER make an appearance on the playground at recess. If your child is shy, bullied, is a bully or has any type of social issue it is brushed off except for a one program that seems to be just for show. Rarely will principal step in to resolve a bullying issue.Parent has to contact her several times and still no results. When kids misbehave/bully their parents are not contacted, so the parents never know about the behavior. So disappointed--could be 4-5 stars if administration was a bit more compassionate regarding the social stuff.
