If you choose this school, pull your students out when they reach 5th grade and put them at Baird Middle School. We had bad experiences in the intermediate grades. Because we stayed involved and asked questions, our daughter's 5th grade teacher ended up ignoring her when she raised her hands with questions. My husband had to go in to speak with him. Some of the teachers at this school are not parent/student friendly. My daughter felt very uncomfortable, especially in his 5th grade class. We were supportive, not causing problems. They do not want parents in their classrooms, which makes one wonder why? I had a choice between Starr and Malloch in the beginning. I wish I'd chosen Malloch. MY children did not enjoy the K-6 years at all.

My children are finally finished with this school. Neither of my children were happy with this school. My oldest was constantly bullied and the administration never interceded. I was forced to demand meetings with the parents of the bullies to get them to stop bothering my child. My younger child had the SAME math teacher in the intermediate grades for 3 years due to the school's attempt to rotate kids like in the middle school. The teacher was very weak and my child is now struggling at middle school in math. You would think that being a "autism/special education" school would mean they know what they are doing with these special needs kids. I know parents that have had to file compliance complaints with California Department of Education to get the services they deserve. The parents won! Take my word for it, as a parent, do not "trust" the school to do right by your children! Be very proactive at this school and watch your kids carefully! It is not what it appears...trust me. There are many parents who have had bad experiences at Starr. If I could do it over again, I would have put my kids elsewhere. Beware!

Two of our sons (in the 1980s), two of our nephews (in the 70s and 80s) and one of our grandsons (currently) went/go to Starr. We have always liked it because it is a good school with a very involved principal and great, involved teachers. We are both retired teachers, both with over 35 years of experience a piece (he in high school, she in middle and high school), and last year she assisted our grandson's K class and this year he assists in his 1st grade class so we have had the opportunity to see different teachers in action as well as the kids and their interaction with each other and the adults. The teachers are concerned, some even offering after-school tutoring on their own time. My grandson's 1st grade teacher, a respected veteran (who was one of our son's 1st grade teachers) love the kids and goes more than the extra mile to get kids to pass their reading tests (and I take my hat off to her). The cases of bullying which some parents cite are, when they occur, dealt with promptly and legally.

Starr is a great school, I love the principle and the teachers. My son cries when he has to miss school.
