Hein is an absolutely amazing school! My child has thrived here. The teachers and staff go above and beyond to make students feel welcome, safe and included. My child has adhd with a 504 plan and his teacher has gone beyond the call of duty to support him, find accommodations that work for him and ensure that he is successful in class. He has been on the honor roll every trimester. His teacher does a superb job of teaching the standards, preparing students for the next grade and presenting the information in a way that makes students excited to learn and go school. The school also does an outstanding job putting on events throughout the year that brings staff, students and families together on campus. We love Hein and highly recommend this school!

We moved to this neighborhood specifically because of what we read on this site. Our experience couldn't be any worse. Our sons kindergarten teacher was terrible and absolutely vicious. His reading and math levels were far above the other students due to his prior year at a private school (Kindergarten level). As such, he was bored. His teacher took this behavior personally and repeatedly took away his recess breaks and did not allow him to go to the bathroom when he needed to. As such, he developed bathroom issues that we are still dealing with. We tried to work with her to no avail. My son was terrified to go to school and appeared listless and defeated. He was no longer the happy loving child that I knew. Frustrated, I called a meeting with his teacher, principle and school psychologist. Although the principle was physically there at the meeting, she seemed like her mind was elsewhere. There were no helpful suggestions or any plan of action proposed. His teacher denied not allowing my son to use the bathroom despite the fact that she did it in front of my wife during a parent teacher conference. The only helpful person was the school psychologist. As a result, we withdrew our child from the school literally 3 days later and enrolled him in Montessori where he thrived. I can only comment about my experience regarding Kindergarten and the ineffective leadership. This is not a place where you want to send your child - unless you want them to join the military or work in a factory. If you have the means, private or charter school is definitely the way to go.

Awesome school ! We are in the 2nd year of this school and its been awesome. I agree, bullying is dealt of immediately and I have seen good changes within the kids. Parent involvement is necessary. But without parent support, no one can survive in these difficult conditions. My son has a new teacher, but she's very good. And the kids respect and love the principal. Good values

Our son attends kindergarten at Arlene Hein. We are very happy with his teacher and the overall school staff and environment. Everyone is very friendly and supportive. His teacher is super involved in the classroom and keeps us updated on our sons progress in class. We couldn't be happier with this school!

There are some really phenomenal teachers here that really care about the students. My once shy daughter has come out of her shell over the course of her 5 years there. The kids seem to really respect the teachers and the principal. It's a great public school with a diverse population of students.

Arlene Hein is a great school. A big part of the pie is the parents and without parent involvement and support you can't blame a school. I disagree with post submitted on 1/13/2010 Bullying is dealt with immediately and all parties are talked to. The Principal and Vice Principal are amazing and are very present on school grounds, playgrounds, parking lot, classrooms. I am very impressed. We are only in 1st grade but Kindergarten year was fantastic and this year has been great. With budget cuts and so many things being cut parents really need to step up. Unless you are involved or care you really don't see the crisis the schools are facing.
