This is horrible school. The staff don't care about the children and the principal is horrible. All the kids do here is fight. They don't have services for special needs children and will discriminate against you.

Hillside high school is the best high school in the city of Durham and beyond. The teacher challenge the students to make them push to be great, well rounded productive citizens. Both of my children and myself are graduates of Hillside high school and I recommend this outstanding school to any student that want to achieve greatness.

Our experience at Hillside High School was great. The staff is very pleasant and the school was nice and clean. I didn’t have any problems talking to the teachers and I was very pleased with my student’s success. I will recommend Hillside High School because of the Professionalism and the Academic support we received.

I have three children that graduated from Hillside, and my wife and I are Alumni as well. Every year Hillside leads the schools with the most Academic and Athletic scholarships. This year garnering over 17million dollars in scholarships. If you want your child to be college ready and prepared for life after High school, Hillside is where they should go. Hillside High School in Durham, NC is an excellent comprehensive school offering outstanding academic and extracurricular programs. The administration is committed to creating an academic environment that supports learning in and out of the classroom. My husband and I are parents of now 4 young adults; three graduated from Hillside and matriculated through and graduated from some of the country’s best colleges.

This school has a very rich heritage in Durham North Carolina. At the helm, is an awesome principle, Dr. Logan. He follows in the footsteps of the legendary Dr. John Harding Lucas Senior. Those of us, who continue to mentor students at the school, treasure the environment that we find when we are present there. Students love being at school and at aspire to do great things. Wonderful scholarship money is invested in the future of these great students. I am the president of the last non-integrated student body class in the history of the school, 1970. We invest in the school and shall continue to support it.

I have one child that graduated from New Tech in 2011 and another child that recently graduated HHS in 2021. He was active in Marching Band and a few other clubs including theater, track, ethics bowl, and Math Club. Hillside is an amazing school. The leadership is unmatched, my children felt seen and heard by school administrators. The culture of the school nurtures all students and actively embraces BIPOC, LGBT and differently abled students. The principal gives consistent updates on what is happening with the school. Hillside has an awesome theater department, students have traveled all over the world under the director of award winning instructor, Wendell Tabb. I am truly grateful for my children’s experience, it prepared then for the real world.

I have two students that excelled at Hillside. The Administration and teachers go above and beyond so every student have the opportunity to succeed. My children learned life lessons at Hillside that help them transition to college and resources and tools they utilize to this day. Go Hornets!!

Hillside High stands as a pivotal role in my children’s education and the Durham community. Exemplary academics is the top priority. However, Hillside administration encourages students to either explore or pursue extra curricular activities to promote well rounded individuals. Hillside high administration and educators develop nurturing and professional relationships with the students. Hillside High excels in academics with graduating seniors receiving many millions in scholarship offers. Hillside High also excels in sports and a world-renowned drama department, debate teams, dance, band and many clubs.

Hillside is where both of my girl attended and had a very successful high school experience. Their time at Hillside prepared them for a higher level of education that allowed them to excel in their college experience. I would recommend Hillside to any family for an exceptional education.

I brought my daughter here knowing how great of a school it was. She went from hating school and making D’s regularly to loving school, making consistent A/B honor roll AND she came out of her shell! The teachers, administrators, and staff really helped with those things. I couldn’t be prouder to be a Hornet Parent!

I sent my only child to HHS for 4 years; and today I have a successful UNC Chapel Hill rising sophomore. Thank you HHS , Durham public, for the IB program and for the commitment to improvement. I would say, your students success depends on your involvement and willingness to help your school. GT

I have had 3 children attend Hillside High since 2007-2014 and I have watched a lot of positive changes throughout the school. I have had the area superintendent Mr. Keys even say to me that Hillside is one of the best kept secrets in Durham. This is because people tend to make decisions focused on rumors they have heard about the school. Hillside has some great programs, IB, Bus.&Fin., New Tech,AP, Honors and has a strong focus on college prep. HHS has some key relationships with colleges and businesses to help your child succeed. The last few years, the graduating classes have earned anywhere from 3-6 million dollars in academic scholarships. Please be mindful that every child and parents experience has alot to do with the individual regardless of where they attend school. Bad teachers can exist in "good" schools as well. Hillside is often compared to Jordan, please know that any high school with teenagers typically face the same type issues. Jordan is not a bad school but is definitely not exempt from issues faced with teaching teenagers. Dr. Lassister and Dr. Logan have completely changed the face of HHS. Go visit, I am sure, you will see it's a good school. Supportive!

When reading these reviews, I think as a teacher it is important to remember the students deserve respect as well as the teachers, and so this goes for the parents of the students in the school. As teachers, we have a duty to "teach" and the students have an opportunity to learn from the teachers. As one parent's stated below, "It is only high school right?" This parent should remember this is not only high school but is also their child's future. Parents need to be supportive of the teachers and what they are trying to accomplish with their children as well as the teachers have to respect the parents and students. You can agree to disagree but respect is certainly important in the school setting.
