This school is not a very good school to send your children too, and no this review is not out of spite. There is a lot of good and bad about the school but as a student i fell more worried about the bad. The teachers (especially math department) at this school are so mean to the students mentally and physically the teachers will assign a ton of homework to complete in one day this is not just homework the teachers will make fun of your children mispronounce their names and not let them use the restroom, in my opinion this is just cruel. Teachers will ENFORCE no eating or drinking even when it comes to water but sit in the classroom eating and drinking. Yes, teachers have more power and authority than students but this in my opinion is just disrespectful. The try to label this school as a good school but there are many fights that happen, and the administration does not really have measures to prevent fights from happening, but they care about student's dress code more than students' safety because the school can do a lot more to prevent fights. All in all, do not buy the deal that they are trying to sell by making it seem like this a great school when in reality it really is not the teachers do not care about the students and there is a lot of flaws in their system

At Nova there is an uncontrollable amount of name calling, insulting, profanity & fights. They also don’t do not nearly enough to prevent this. The only way to succeed here is to work your butt off & avoid most students. They don’t care about overworking you. If you have 5 hours of homework each day (like I do) All you can do is suck it up, don’t do anything else other than schoolwork and keep going after your mental breakdown, which you will have. Some teachers/staff also have bad attitudes and crazy short tempers.

I really love nova middle. The teachers are very supportive and helpful. I struggled with math in my old school and as soon as I came to nova, I got really good at math. They have a lot of activities and they are very good. Though, some of the kids are rude, They respect the teachers are are being nice to them.

If I could go back and change one thing in my life, it would be to never have attended Nova Middle School. I will always carry the emotional burden of being a child who went through relentless bullying at the hands of my classmates, while teachers and administrators turned a blind eye and chose not to protect me. It looks like not much has changed since I was a student there. The indifference of some of the teachers to the suffering of children is disgusting. Parents, talk to your kids and listen to your instincts. Don’t rely on the adults at this school to inform you of bullying and violence going on inside the classroom.

My son just started at NOVA during the pandemic last year. He went from being a straight A Honor Roll student to a kid with D's and F's during remote learning. Once he returned to campus he seemed happier and his grades improved dramatically. He has never experienced any bullying or issues of this nature. We talk often and he is one of those kids who sticks up for anyone who is being bullied. He has not had any bad experiences this year. The teachers are supportive when you reach out. I have issues with the grading and attendance policies but I'm chalking it up to the crazy time this covid has created. I'm going to give this school 4 stars because I know that once things settle down it will be an excellent alternative to the school he was zoned to attend. Overall I am happy with NOVA and grateful especially to Ms. BARRIOS who takes extra time to tell us the odd/even days , when grades have been updated and is very specific and kind about letting kids make up work they might have not turned in. She has been a Godsend for me in particular. I would have been lost without her and Ms. Heller's kind help and willingness to speak with me and answer my many questions. So far so good. I would recommend this school to family and friends! The alternatives are not pretty.

There is terrible bullying going on at this school, particularly in GYM. Why is the gym teacher for (2018-2019) 6 graders not doing her job? Our child has had several incidents of bullying while at gym. We had to pull him and place him in counselling because he has been so traumatized. He got his tooth knocked out by another child and the teacher sent him to the clinic with some other kids; when we called to speak to her on the phone, she was rude: claiming she had many students to supervise. Ok, so what else was so important for her to supervise while our kid was being punched in the stomach and his tooth knocked out???? And no one from the clinic or school called us to make us aware of what happened that day, our boy texted us himself!!! He is now wearing an implant in one of his front teeth.Another incident: a boy threw his phone under the bleachers and claimed it was an accident. The school told us the bleacher benches was broken and they could not retrieve the phone. We had to get him a new phone!!Another thing: The students at this school need guidance counselling sessions: they are starting or going through puberty and need to understand that sex and sexuality are natural and normal. Our child has been exposed to conversations about bisexual and transsexual.....this seems to be what all of these young 12 year olds are concerned about! They have labeled him and called him a derogative homosexual slur, simply because he is quiet and sticks to himself. We are sick of it......At the end of year meeting we were told that those students may not be returning, but did not get any verification of this!!We get nothing but praises and good comments from the teachers about our boy, but this 6 grade experience has left us shaken up and him not wanting to go back

In 2018 and 2019, my kids did unbelievably well. The teachers may be overworked with over-sized classes, but they can really teach. The "A" the school merited demonstrates that. But I must really say how much the elective teachers have supported my 3 kids. The Chorus teacher, the Spanish teachers, especially. They're the best. And as for the rest of the teachers, most of them are Grade A. I appreciate them more than you can know.

My son is in the 8th grade. Since my son has been here, he's been dealing with bullying. I've spoke with the AP as well as the guidance counselor and nothing has been done. My coworker is now having the same problem with this school. My son's grades have dropped drasticly because of bullying. I plan on calling the district director to have them investigate the bullying at the school. My son will not be attending Nova High.

If i could give a 0 out of 5 stars, i would. Was a fan of Elementary but now that my son started middle school, this school is no good. No good for reasons like teachers being sarcastic and rude to parents (unprofessional) and the ridiculous amount of work and projects a child has every day. I mean, if teachers were smart, they would know a child learns with activities not their faces implanted on paper at school and at home. Educate the teachers and then allow them to educate our children. Children need time to be children and play or have fun.

My kids were great at Eisenhower no problem. But when my daughter started nova middle school it all went left. Her first year which is this year, I have met with administration maybe around 5 times this year. The teacher had my daughter pulled out of her class to call me on the phn to talk to me about something an email that I sent her. I couldn't believe it. The teacher who eventually got on the phn with me started to tell me how to email her and what not to say and when to say it. I have never been through this before. I couldn't believe my ears. I setup a conference that did not solve anything. The teacher requested, yes the teacher requested that my day who is very quiet to be removed out of her class because of the parent. I was so disappointed in this school and administration. We met with VP and nothing was solved. I was contacted saying they were removing her out of the teacher with is a lady classroom. I could not tell you how disappointed I was at this school for accommodating the teacher instead of putting the student first. My sister who is also a teacher at another school was in disbelief. Not nova she said. I said yes . I feel like my daughter is attending a regular public school.

I am the grandparent of three children at Nova Middle. This year (2013-2014) one of them has a wonderful math teacher, a wonderful law teacher and the (wonderful) new Spanish teacher. I am totally impressed except the administration seems to be generally, well ... not-too-professional. It's a good thing the teachers are so good. Otherwise, I would not have too many good things to say for this highly overrated school. The new Media Teacher is quite helpful, too. So: Good Faculty - Not-so-Good Administration. Kids complain of dirty bathrooms without soap.

My child is an 8th grader at Nova Middle School. My experience there has been wonderful. The new Principal Dr. Fleming is great. He is innovative in his approach to education and is constantly bringing new classes and programs to the school. The majority of my childs teachers have been wonderful. I do not find discipline to be a problem at this school. I would highly recommend this school to other parents. Nova Middle encourages the students to be challenged and there are many opportunities to take high school classes in middle school. The school did go through some hard times a few years ago. But now with the new principal and administration the school is the best it has ever been.

This is the first year my son is attending Nova Middle school. He is in 6th grade and so far, likes all of his teachers. My family has met the principal "Mr. Fleming" and was extremely impressed on what his goals are for all of the students at Nova Middle and Nova High School. He is well spoken and very approachable. The older students that we have met are very pleasant and driven. Overall, students are well diversified which is a great eye opener for the kids when they enter into the world of employment. Nova, so far, thumbs up from my family to yours!

The comments below do not pertain to NMS--NMS is a PUBLIC school --you win a lottery to get into the school and their is no tuition As the schools PTSA President I can assure you we have NO parents getting paid for any kind of volunteer time

In the 2009-2010 school year, they let in a lot of families zoned for a certain Middle School in H'wood, tossing the "lottery" aside and BAM, the school changed overnight: Suddenly they had HUGE discipline problems & it became a TITLE I school. Ok, so "Title I" gives the school more funding, but it also becomes a youth prison and not a school anymore. Those of us who raised our kids properly, read to them when they were little, put them in the Nova lottery the day they were born and have volunteered at the schools since day 1 of Kindergarten, we have been forced to pull our kids out and pay for a proper education in a safe learning environment. What a shame. I miss the diversity of Nova, but not the unruly and unintelligent kids that now demand discipline all day long and require an abundance of "low-level" classes as the "higher level classes" are being fazed out. Nova Middle has turned into a prison, not the open-flow educational campus that it once was. And the domino effect is beginning to occur as these kids are matriculating to Nova HS- it is starting to get bad at the HS, as well.

The bus system really needs to revamp itself. When the bus is late there is no answer when you call the proper number.

my daughter is in the 8th grade right now and it is awful she has no time to do homework because the school gets out late and when she does homework she up until 1 o' clock in the morning. teachers are not really good only about 40% of the teachers there can teach, also the students are o.k.
