The experience my family has had at this school has been severely poor. This school is not a staple but rather a stain on the community and a thorn in it's parents sides. Pipeline to prison best describes this institution of subpar learning . I would not be surprised if the children who later wind up in prison in the coming years, mostly came from Chicago Public Schools like Metcalfe. Something must be done about the atrocity that is Metcalfe Elementary "no longer" Math and Science Academy.

The classroom sizes are terribly overcrowded. The student to teacher ratio does not allow for much if not any, one on one classroom instruction. My child is in the second grade and there are 52 children in her class. These children have behavioral issues that aren't being addressed due to the classroom size. There is a fairly new administration in place however, they're efforts have not proven successful to date as they are always in the "figuring things out" stage. I'll be removing my daughter as of the end of this school semester as I can not take a chance on the administration taking yet another year not figuring out a better system to address the behavioral/community issues present in the school in congruence with the academic/social needs of every student. I would advise against any parent sending a child they love and care for to this ill fated tragedy of a school. They mean well but aren't doing well. Disappointing to parents already struggling to find better academic options in a community ridden with several school closings already.

I'm truly disappointed in this school. I have two children there in kindergarten and 1st grade. I find myself doing more home schooling than the teachers are teaching. My children are not being challenged and this explains why the school was on the list to be closed last year. They would have done the children a favor had they been shut down. I don't recommend sending your child here. The classes are crowded which prevents room for one on one if needed. Children are not being challenged nor encouraged to go to the maximum potential. Those that are ready to move forward can't because they are being overlooked due to the one teacher and many students. The security for the children is limited. The location of the school is not in the best area and it appears that isn't being taken into consideration when providing appropriate staff. The school has no computers yet they will be tested this year on one. I don't see the concern in the children's success, I see the concern of keeping the budget at the children's expense. Don't get me wrong, there are some teachers there that are awesome. It's just not enough of them to go around to every class.
