My child attended Keller from 1st through 3rd grade from about 2014-2018. Keller is a great place for 100% compliant children who are not “outside the box” thinkers or who are “twice exceptional.” I think they should call it an “academically advanced” school, rather than a “gifted” school (RGC.) The best teacher that my child had that truly understood their needs was the first grade teacher, who coincidentally was the only teacher who had a gifted certification. I expected it to be a place where students would explore their interests and develop critical thinking skills, but it was basically a “by the book” school that only takes the top 10% of test takers and really does not help truly gifted students grow. They take and produce good test takers. When my child transferred to another RGC, they were not prepared for the level of writing that the school was doing. The new school definitely focused on developing a “growth mindset” in students, while I didn’t even realize until we left that Keller really focused on a “fixed mindset.” I also don’t think that Keller valued diversity in ways of thinking. That was a major struggle for my child. There are lots of good things about Keller-great cultural diversity in families/children (which is rare in Chicago,) great parent involvement and family events, great cultural presentations/assemblies, and my child did meet some true intellectual peers, who remained friends for years to come.

We love this school, it's challenging, and the teachers are caring and communicative. Our child finally has found friends and peers that also enjoy academics. The school sends a weekly newsletter to keep parents informed, and there is also a grade-level newsletter.

This is an excellent school with top-notch academics. The leadership is fantastic. I have found leadership quite informative and responsive. The teachers are very engaged. My son absolutely loves attending here, however, the pandemic has played a major role in on-site learning this school year.

Not happy with the school leadership. Bullying is a big issue in this school and current principal (Conley Dunbar, Chalese) fails to take action.

I go to this amazing school. I have gone there since first grade, the grade at which students come to Keller, I am now in seventh. The students here are nice and welcoming. The teachers are understanding and very dedicated to what they do. I love the academics.

After a very new year in CPS I am very happy with Keller. The principal is new here and I think she has done a great job. The staff is very caring and ready to talk when approached in a civil manor. I look forward to next year, a year with out the controversy of this past and many more years at this wonderful school with so many caring staff and parents.

2012-2013 will be an interesting experience. Principal has lost trust from so many parents. Recovery will be difficult but may be possible if there is honesty and transparency on the principal's part. Building a school's culture and climate cannot be top down but side by side with all members of the school community. The parents and students care about the quality of education and extra-curricular experiences. Hopefully, the environment will return to what is was before Nov. 2011.
