My child is in her fifth year at Haugan and I also have past experience as a parent with several other Chicago public schools, most which are much more highly rated on test score based metrics like great schools. I believe there are many fine schools in Chicago, but in my view Haugan stands out and is exceptional by almost every measure. It is frustrating to me that Haugan is rated low by Great Schools and other rating systems that focus solely on test scores, as I believe these measures say more about where a kid starts than the value a school adds. For my older kids, I overlooked Haugan, which is my neighborhood school, in favor of magnet or gifted options with "better" ratings. I am very thankful that for my youngest we gave the local school a chance and to have been part of the Haugan community. I highly recommend this school. Haugan fully realizes the ideal of an excellent public education for every child, no matter what their background. The teachers, staff, and administrators go above and beyond to create a positive and enriched learning environment. Differentiation is taken seriously and classroom teachers strive to make sure all students grow academically, whether they start well below or above grade level (and one classroom may have a full such range). All the teachers my child has had have been very effective, incredibly dedicated, kind and caring. My child feels challenged but not overwhelmed and is always engaged in school. At least through fifth grade, there isn't much homework. Additionally, there is a lot of joy and fun. The children have frequent field trips, including to walkable destinations and elsewhere in Chicago, and the after school activity choices are varied and interesting. School sports are available for grades 5 and up and there is a lot of school spirit. There are frequent assemblies and many of them celebrate the diverse cultures represented in our school. The school is very diverse by almost any measure. There are several family nights and fun events each year as well which are very creatively planned and run and are well attended. There is a strong focus on the arts and student performances are always lovely. Discipline is restorative and focused on upholding the expectation of mutual respect that is modeled by the adults in the building. I do not have any direct experience with the special education program but I believe the teachers in the program are just as dedicated and talented as other Haugan teachers.

My son has been going to Haugan for two grades now. Kindergarten was great. He had a wonderful teacher and great classmates. His 1st grade teacher was also good and attentive. We were always being updated on progress via app. Easy to get into contact with teachers as well. This school has certainly stepped up it's game with the renovations and new playground.

My boys are nearing the end of their third year here and I have to say that we LOVE our school. They have had wonderful, involved teachers that go above and beyond. Both of my children receive special education services and I cannot say enough good things about the Special Ed teachers. They work tirelessly, and often without thanks, to serve the most vulnerable population at the school. They love the kids they serve and it shows. Both of my boys have made tremendous progress academically, socially and emotionally due to their support and encouragement. The staff and administration is responsive. The only reason I'm giving 4/5 stars is because the playground/recess grounds are severely lacking. I understand that this is due to a district budget and not the school itself, but it's really a shame that their isn't more importance faced on physical education and the benefits of recess in a fun environemnt. Overall, we love our school and its teachers!
