A gem of a neighborhood school tucked in a residential area of Uptown. The campus is very large and has a full size library, a computer room with 3D printers, 2 indoor gyms, a music and theater classroom and an auditorium. This school serves an economically and culturally diverse population and at drop off you hear parents speaking many different languages with their children. Making a school choice was not easy but I am glad I tried out Goudy and I will be sending my younger child there as well. The innovative curriculum and the diversity is what won me over.

I have had children at this school for 8 years now. This staff and administration are truly a cohesive team, a group of passionate and dedicated educators. A beauty school library, music, drama, engineering…community engagement, enrichment programming, acceptance and +/- 40 languages spoken with learners from worldwide cultures. This school also actively obtains grant funding and forms partnerships for many great things (Bikes for the middle school PE curriculum, murals in the school, coding workshops, science clubs, etc). I believe being a technology academy helped in the online learning transition when covid hit. It was hard on teachers and students regardless, but this school handled it pretty well. My children have had academic and socio-emotional success at this school.

Our daughter has been a student for 2 years (pre-k and Kindergarten). So far, we've been overly impressed by the entire school. Our daughter feels encouraged and engaged, and has made some fantastic friends in one of the most culturally diverse environments I've ever seen. A+ to everyone at Goudy!

Very Good. My son’s first grade teacher is well equipped academically, and socially and culture informed to lead a diverse student body of 21st century learners.

Goudy has a lot to offer and is an excellent neighborhood school! My child loves the specials - Engineering Lab, Computer Lab, Drama, Music, Physical Education (twice weekly) and Library. The school is extremely diverse, with 40+ languages spoken. The administration is outstanding and works hard to keep classrooms small. And the kids are wonderful.

This school is amazing. #LOVE LIVES HERE, and they stand by these words. You have to meet the Principal Ms. Brandt to understand why. She cares. She truly cares about the kids, her staff, parents, and school. Good things happen only in places where people care. Before we toured the school, we thought of selling our house and moving somewhere with the "better schools." After we actually went to school, saw the school, and felt the atmosphere, we fell in love with this place and these people. I know that many people look at demographics, poverty level, number of kids who are native speakers, but none of that matters. Classes are small enough to accommodate everyone. Kids are smart, kind, and happy. Our child after just one month (!) in school (K) knows almost all the letters, started adding numbers, suddenly became obsessed with the art and engineering projects (Goudy is the only school in Chicago that has an engineering lab) at home (yes, our energetic crazy kid sits down and works on the "projects" for extended periods of time). Our child is happy to go to school! There is no whining in the mornings about not wanting to get up and go to school. Goudy is not given the praise it truly deserves. I don't understand why someone would pay $20+K for a private school when everything (including free breakfasts and lunches) is available right here. Without commute, without added anxieties of crazy parental and school expectations, without overpaying... Yes, Goudy doesn't have an effective after-school program, but there are plenty of after-care providers who come to school and pick up kids (3 to 6 pm). You want to change the community? Join the school and do something about making kids feel loved and cared for.

Our experience is probably a 9/10. The only thing that could use greater improvement is greater family/parent involvement.

My child was diagnosed with high-functioning autism at age eight, and before enrolling him, I met with Goudy's then assistant principal to assure that an IEP was in place. During my boy's time at Goudy, he did not receive accommodations, and his IEP was not honored. Additionally, the school principal and his teacher didn't intervene when he was continuously bullied--although both he and I reported the bullying on several occasions. (Administrators and teachers deny that bullying takes place and fail to admonish those who are accused.)When my son rightfully defended himself, he was blamed and stereotyped. If children have special needs that affect their day-to-day functioning, Goudy is not the place for them. The school does not responsibly mainstream students into general education classrooms and does not offer consistent support. There is also, as at most schools across the United States, a bias against African American students--especially boys. I withdrew my son, enrolled him in a private school, and he is now a thriving high school student.

Both my children have come to Goudy just this year, from a private Catholic school. The school staff and learning environment are top-notch. The quality of education and exposure to technology, along with fostering a thirst for knowledge and exploration, make this a good environment for learning. It is an urban environment, which we love. Which is to say, there is a beautiful cross-section of people and cultures represented within the student body. If you are more comfortable in a homogenous world, maybe this school would push you beyond your comfort zone. But we love seeing our children prosper and grow, prepared for the world and making friends without consideration of color or culture. Goudy strives to educate children who are well-prepared for a competitive, diverse world. They are honest, fair, and truly committed to their students.

You should check out community first, like any public school, this is who they cater to in terms of educating children. Then get to know better yet observe administrators, my experience not as bad as most, but definately in need of change of those in charge. They are not advocates of parental involvement and will treat your child based on sterio types and their (administrators) previous school experiences, which are for the most part, not very positive; sure most have been the the public school system for decades, the question is job security vs positive experiences vs dedication to ALL children. I think the 5 star rating is a result of most of them writing their own reviews!
