My sped student transferred here from a VBCPS school and let me just say … NIGHT and DAY difference! From day 1 everyone has been so helpful and friendly and I finally feel like i’m dealing with a school that’s knowledgeable and equipped to handle my childs needs/accommodations. Before we’ve been made to feel like our needs were so out of reach — here they started her in a class that’s perfect for her IEP and have really made this process a breeze. Any problems with gps most likely stem from systemic/general k-12 issues; like the building itself is not amazing lol, and the drop off line is annoying, but the staff and experience has been 10/10

Great staff who care about the kids. Teachers absolutely do their best and administrators respond quickly when issues are brought to them.

We have been very happy overall with our experience there this year. My Daughter's teacher has been great with communication and making sure we work together to get her everything she needs. The PTA is excellent and staff at the school is very friendly and helpful. My Daughter has enjoyed her class this year.

The first year he went there I would say it was the worst because we didn't know he had vision issues and ADHD and the teacher did not help us with it. She was horrible. The second and third year of doing 1st grade over and now 2nd grade he has improved tremendously. If the teacher we had in first grade wasn't so horrible and would have communicated more effectively instead of negative feedback all the time and what he was doing wrong. He would have had a better chance at the beginning instead of dealing with all of it in the end.

My sons teachers were good with teaching, but not good with taking bullying seriously. He was bullied by the same student for a year, all while his teacher, counselor, Vice Principal, and principal knowing. It escalated to a criminal level and even then, all they did was cover their own butts. I could never trust them to keep my child safe during school hours, ever again.

This school has no set standards for a teacher's curriculum, therefore what a child is taught varies from teacher to teacher which can effect the child in the coming year when they're expected to know things they've not been taught. The school also has extremely our communication 26th parents. They call for EVERY fundraising event yet failed to contact us about a suspicious man lurking around the school, or when my child was hurt at school.

Two of my children have attended GPS. Overall, it is a good school. We loved our teachers & never had an issue with school admin or staff. I occasionally volunteered throughout the school year with both children so I was able to see student, admin & teacher interactions. I would also eat lunch with my children throughout the school year. My kids loved that mom would come each lunch with them. Lunch room monitors are a tough group. My daughter attended private K but attended 1 & 2 at GPS. My son attended K thru 2nd. Our daughter's first year didn't start out perfectly as they didn't hire enough 1st grade teachers & ended up taking her & children from the other 1st grade classes to create a new class. This was already a few weeks into the new school year. However, it worked out great. Our new teacher was young & had a Master's degree. Great energy & leadership skills as she had a challenge as well. Our children were reading above grade level throughout their time there & had no issues with academics. Our teachers all gave out email address at the beginning of school & that is how I mainly corresponded with them. I always received a reply in a timely manner. Our kids loved their teachers. I'm an involved parent that sits down with the kids to help with homework so I am was aware of how much work was sent home & what material they were covering. The school does have a gym & separate cafeteria that also doubles as an assembly room for in school presentations and concerts. We attended both children's yearly concerts & never had an issue finding a seat or being able to see our children. Library is nice & adequate. Children attend computer, music & library class weekly, PE twice a weekly & art/guidance rotated every other week. Playground equipment is adequate & surrounded by fence. Security at the front desk is good. Be prepared to explain why you are there & have an ID. If you let the teacher know you are coming the day before, you will be put on the security list so it makes it easier. You will not be able to walk your child to class in the morning. Some parents have an issue with that I do not. Kid drop off is ridiculous as parents do not know how to let their child get out of the car & keep the line moving. Teachers/staff are there to assist getting out. PTA not so in love with due to excessive fundraising but they do get new equipment.

Greenbrier Primary school is a terrific school. My three children attended this school and it was a wonderful experience for each of them. The staff and teachers work closely together to give their students a great learning environment. The school has up to date books for the Accelerated Reading program, a nice fenced in play ground, and plenty of opportunities for parent involvement. We love GRP!

Extremely disappointed with the PTA - They don't act on input from parents, they are disorganized and they set up the class concerts terribly. Most parents couldn't even see their child. This school has no gym and their cafeteria acts as their auditorium... Certain teachers are good, but others are terrible and do not want parental involvement.

The teacher my daughter has at this school is wonderful. If the administrative staff wasn't so rude the overall experience would be much better. There is no need for top administration to talk down to parents. Very discouraging.

My child has been in K and 1st grade at this school. The student teacher ratio is abysmal. This school has no idea how to properly run a fundraiser. No matter the event (fall festival, breakfast with Santa, etc.) you are forced to pay $5 a ticket for each person in your family, or $20 max for a family larger than four. Because it was ridiculous to pay $20 to have a cheap breakfast with Santa, we didn't even go. However, I would have paid for $10 for just my two children to participate while my husband and I sat with them. I was told this was not an option. There was no description of activities at the Fall Festival, and you're forced to buy tickets in advance, so we decided not to go to that either. They also have a ridiculous amount of products for the children to sell during the year (candles, entertainment books, etc.) I understand the school needs money, but when the children don't go on field trips, teachers are CONSTANTLY asking for basic supplys like soap and paper towels, and the school doesn't hold very many family centric activities, parents become jaded on constantly donating money. I would love to donate my time, but the school doesn't seem to use volunteers too much.

My son entered 1st grade at this school after 4 years in an excellent private school. After the 1st semester, all my worries vanished. GP is a great school and takes academics seriously, reading in particular. Dedicated staff and teachers. I only wish that their playground would be fenced.

My son attended a supposed top rated school in Virginia Beach where they did nothing for him except send home nasty grams his kindergarten and first half of first grade. Within 3 weeks of transferring to GPS, he was implemented into the Child Study Committee where he was diagnosed as being autistic. The staff went through a great deal with my son with outside social workers, EVMS Dr's, guidance counselors, prinicpal was involved, etc. Without the staff at GPS, my son would still be struggling at that highly rated VBPS. His teachers in first grade and second grade at GPS, have been very involved, and played a huge role in obtaining his diagnosis and implementing the IEP he needed. Moving to Chesapeake and transferring my son was the BEST possible thing I could have ever done for him!

I would not recommend my child to this school!!!! The parent to teacher communication is very poor and if your child has problems in school then they say that it is a learnig disablity. They are very rude and short with parents who have concerns or options about their teaching methods. I agree with the other parents they are not warm and fuzzy. Also it all depends on the teacher.... pray that you can find a good one or get out as soon as you can!!!!

I have a child in 2nd grade and one in kindergarten here. In a time when many programs are being cut, this school offers so much. They have art, music, computer, and P.E. classes. The library is great and the A.R. program is encouraged. The guidance counselor has workshops for kids of divorced parents, deployed family members, etc. There is a speech therapist and school nurse on staff. Children are recognized for being star students and for good character. Their names are announced over the intercom on birthdays. Parental involvement in the classrooms is encouraged and appreciated. The PTA is active and offers numerous activities throughout the year. I can not say enough about this school! Children are encouraged to become well rounded individuals.
