Oakdale elementary has been my kids school for 3 yrs now and I can say I underestimated this school based on previous years reviews. The principal and staff are very pleasant and friendly. They have provided my children with the help and support they’ve needed along the way. I know my child had some difficulties catching up to grade level expectations but his teachers have been helping him every way they can. If only 15 mins of one on one extra time daily has made a difference. I’m truly happy they care that much. As a mother it makes me feel better he’s getting the attention he needs academically. The schools has multiple school functions that my kids are always excited to attend when we can. Multiple activities like school concerts and book fairs in the year. The parents can be actively involved with volunteering in field trips and classroom events. I’m surprised but pleased that so far my kid has 4 field trips this school year because it makes them look forward to attending museums, theatre plays, visitation at J.C Smith University and even go bowling. I would also like to include that the school does provide weekly to daily updates of school events as well as classroom activities through Parent Square which only parents have access to; so scheduling conferences or messaging my kids teachers about any questions have been super easy and efficient. I do think Dr. Powell has been doing a great job in the advances of this school.

Not that bad but it could've been better. All I care about is that I'm in a great school now. (Piedmont IB Middle School)

Oakdale is not a bad school. Most of the staff and teachers are very pleasant. But unfortunately, the school lacks the funds and the ability to fully help each child reach his or her potential. There are not any teaching assistants or tutors, and substitutes are definitively not qualified to be in the classrooms. There is one teacher to almost 30 children, which is impossible to make sure each one is meeting his or her goals. Behavior from most of the children is awful, but there isn't much they can do because they lack the ability to handle each situation and sadly a lot of the parents truly don't care. But the school still tries. They offer many field trips, school wide activity days, programs for kids to join, and volunteer opportunities. I wish the school could receive more funds and resources to allow them the potential they could be. I also wish there was stronger community who wanted to help the school and the children reach their highest potential. So average rating because the school is not awful but with a lot of odds against it, its defiantly not the best either.

Oakdale has the potential for being an awesome school, but it definitely needs some restructuring and better leadership. The principal lacks leadership and relies a great deal on her support staff who are clearly not qualified for such responsibilities. A degree doesn't make you automatically qualified for such roles. If your child(ren) have any type of behavioral, mental or learning disabilities, please consider another school where they're willing to accommodate their needs. Last year my 6 year old son who is diagnosed with a mental disability had to experience being arrested by CMSPD upon the request of Dean Gaines-Montgomery. Her action clearly confirmed my child's future was not in her best interest. I was involved from day one but unfortunately it was like pulling teeth to receive the adequate support & effort needed for my son to be successful while at Oakdale. Parent involvement at the school is very low, therefore possibly my efforts were unexpected. Now that he is at a new school, receiving the support & encouragement needed to thrive, he's doing awesome! Never let anyone deny your child(ren) an education they deserve!

This school SUCKS!!!! SO unprofessional and very unorganized!!! Went and registered my daughter for school and I go to the open house and she is not even in the system yet. Then I call back on Friday and still nothing and she starts school on Monday. SO she doesn't even know who her teacher is or anything. Then I don't understand the schedule. My husband and myself have to go to work at 8:00AM but yet she cannot be to school until 8:15. What kind of elementary school don't start until 8:45. I wish my daughter did not have to go to this sorry school.

Oakdale Elementary has alot of heart, my granchildren love it. Teachers and staff have always been open and freindly. When the school seen something that may be an deterent for learning, there was a meeting and more that one person from the school showed up for support, to ask how can we help. When I drop of my granchildren or visit the school, there are freindly smiling faces that I see-showing me the right people are here and enjoying their job with our precious children. Over all a great school, very happy with it. One thing to impove is the crosswalk to the school, sometimes the gate is locked and children have to walk around through the parking lot when crossing with the crossing gaurd.

This school is terrible. The new principle lacks leadership and is oblivious to what goes on around her, nothing ever gets done. A lot of talking is done but no results. The staff have been rude and unprofessional on several occasions and I have witnessed teachers speaking to the students very rudely. PARENTS, if your children attend this school watch them closely and become active in the school. I have never experienced anything like this at a school and I hope I never will again.

Enjoyed my visit! I think the assistant teacher had room for improvement, though. The office staff were friendly and made me feel welcomed.
