Our experience at Lunsford MS has been excellent. My son came here on special permission after having a very difficult 6th grade year at his assigned school. We did not know about "special permission" or we would have applied sooner. The teachers are all very organized and go above and beyond to help all students to be successful in their learning. The main office is always helpful if I have needed anything and are friendly and smile when you come in. I have 3 children that are or have been in LCPS and this is not always the case. From the moment you walk in, you feel a sense of happiness in the school. I also substitute teach here and it truly is a great place to be! The principals, deans, and counselors all work together to make this school the best place to learn and have fun! The custodians are also very friendly and keep hand sanitizer filled in the classrooms and the school clean and sanitized at the end of the week. My son is extremely happy here and I only wish the Freedom HS was not looking to be at capacity again. Now, he may have to be confronted by the bullies that he left from.

This school is one of the worst schools in the DMV, They even appeared on the news for such a badly organized school

I do not like Lunsford Middle School at all. My daughter always got bullied here, in fact some of which was physical. The teachers didn't do a thing about it. No support was given to my poor child. My daughter did not have any friends and didn't like the teachers, all of which were strict and assigned so much homework that, my daughter was up untill 3 am. Do not go here, do not experience what my daughter did. This is why me and my daughter, and my husband, and my grandma moved to southwestern community college.

I do not like this school at all. My daughter got bullied by everyone, and had no friends. People said racial slurs too. I am not happy with my experience at lunsford, which is why i transferred to western community college

As a substitute teacher, I work in different schools in the area and I have also worked in different neighboring counties. I am able to see what kind of things the students are working on. I do feel that students learn a lot in a short amount of time and the lessons correspond to the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL). Teachers highlight what the standards are and plan their lessons and assessments based on those standards. With that said, I do believe that a lot of emphasis is put on what will be on the test? and there is a test right around the corner. Students have to learn the material quickly and then produce study guides before the tests to then turn around to have a test that looks similar if not exact to the study guide. I do believe that this is a "teach to the test" method. In certain classes such as the social sciences one there are not enough ways to get a grade other than just taking a test. This greatly hurts students that are not good test takers or have a learning or developmental disability. I wish that the school was more creative about the lessons and find various ways to assess the material so that everyone can find their own method to succeed. The class sizes are also very large and I have been told that students often do not have a a connection with the teacher as they are rushing through the material to get ready for a test. Also, not all teachers provide the feedback that students need as to how to do things better or how to re-do or revise the work. Students often times are just rushed through work in order to meet timelines. This is perhaps a county issue and not so much a local school issue. I have noticed that because of the lack of a dress code policy from LCPS, students wear just about anything they want ranging from pajamas to sports bras. It creates a very sloppy and less professional learning environment that seems to distract from learning as teachers and other students are commenting on the inappropriate clothing that some students chose to wear. Phones are a big distraction and on many occasions where students are told to put their phones away as LCPS nor the school has a defined cell phone policy. The school does exhibit a safe learning environment where students appear safe and happy to learn and the teachers appear happy to work there.

Since moving to J Michael Lunsford Middle School my daughter has soared in Academic, her overall drive to do her best and she is a straight A student now. The newer school is a happy environment and the staff is top notch. They are always welcoming and nice to great you. They care about out kids. If your child does bad on a test.......they care! They will work with them and give you the opportunity to better your grade. I can't say enough great things about this school. The best decision and glad we are a part of it. I can't say enough wonderful things about this school.

Schools on hyperdrive now and has lost the fun learning environment it had under previous admin. Too much testing and projects...parents get frequent emails from principal chastising us for whatever she thinks we aren't doing right - bringing in instruments and homework, picking up kids wrong, questioning the amount of homework, etc., etc. She was in charge of discipline at her last school and enjoys seeing students get in trouble - she also thinks it's too easy to get As. Why doesn't she try studying for 4-6 exams a week? Too bad - it used to be better. She and her admin staff need to relax and stop ruining our school!

Until recently we really loved Lunsford. The principal was fantastic and the staff he hired was very enthusiastic - they challenged the students while making it a fun environment to learn in. This year there's a new principal and she's established some new procedures that are questionable. The first is what she calls "rigorous" projects. Within a 2 week period recently, our son had 10 of these rigorous projects that caused many late nights (up until midnight) due to the short deadlines and the fact that he also had to keep up with his regular studying for tests and homework. This new and unjustifiable amount of work caused a lot of anxiety for him and many of his friends. These kids are used to a heavy workload in this area but throwing all of these complex projects into the mix is just ramping it up too much. The students are already in school 7 hours a day and spend a good amount of time on regular quiz and test prep and homework. The new principal and her staff have just taken this to a whole new level that is completely unreasonable. She should have taken the time to gauge the school environment first before implementing all these projects on students this year. No kid in middle school should ever be up that late doing homework. Thank goodness my last child will be out of Lunsford soon.

My daughter will have spent 6th and 7th here at the end of the year. She has LOVED middle school, felt challenged by her teachers, and made amazing friends. We will be moving this summer and she is so sad to leave! The band program has been a fabulous experience for her and she has loved most of her teachers. If you are moving to the area, you will not be disappointed with this school.

I am very happy with Lunsford. Their teachers, staff, and administration are wonderful with the kids and very helpful when any problem arises. In my opinion, it is the best middle school in Loudoun County.

As a former teacher here, I can tell you this is the best school with which I have ever been involved. The teachers and administration work together to make sure no student falls through the cracks. The culture is one of excellence for all!
