This is my son's 2nd year at Roy H. Mann. Unfortunately Covid-19 knocked out almost a year of in-person learning, one-on-one with teachers, social activities, etc.. My son coming from a grammar school with high academic skills, it was tough for us to actually accept and settle down based on so many negative prior reviews. However, we did, and I advised my son to stay focus and told him that he can be anything he wants to be wherever he goes. He is focused, but it's kind of funny how parents gravitate towards the so-called 'better schools and neighborhoods' not thinking that they can help to make a difference wherever they go.I have been on all the PTA Meetings and serve as a SLT member at other meetings of this school and I must say that there is poor representation of the parents at the PTA meetings, so my question is, why do people complain or find so many faults if they are not stepping up to try to make a difference? I find the Principal, the Vices, Deans, Teachers, Paras, the entire Bd. of Educators at this school to be approachable, friendly, helpful and they get back to you with any concerns or questions unlike the 'Prep' school my son came from.Listen people, you and I, we make the difference, so if you need to see improvements at this school, let it start with us and our kids - plain and simple! Be proactive in the school! Ask Questions! Meet out to teachers if you have concerns or call the office! Do something instead of saying something - that's negative!

This school is really trying to improve and I commend them for making Bergen Beach a better place to live in this past year. Thank you to the administration and staff for working so hard.

I am reading some of the comments written here on this site. It never fails to amaze me how people complain about schools, their jobs, clubs or anything there is in life. But, never step forward to either lend advice or slide their sleeves up and get involved. My children went to Roy Mann years ago, my son is going to be 28 and my daughter is now 25. I lived in the neighborhood for over 22 years. The biggest complaint we had back then was that there were too many double parked cars. Times have changed, so have most of the problems of society. I believe we baby our young adult children way too much as a society. My mother and her PA back in the 60's and 70's fought hard to make the schools what they were.SAFE! yes of course many moms work today and some can't be bothered. As long as nothing is interfering with their workouts at the gym, their work schedule, their vacations or shopping, all is good. GUESS what people stop sitting on the sidelines, get to the schools PTA meetings, voice your opinion there and then volunteer to do something about it. Imagine a PTA meeting where the schools staff who is there for your children, out number the parents.. shameful is right..SHAME ON YOU.

my son is a 6th grader there now. And since September there has been a problem atleast 1 a week. My child just would like to go to school and learn without all the nonsense. The supervision or lack of does nothing but yes's you to death. This is our local school and sad to say this is the worst school. I would not send any child there. Nothing but problems and nothing gets done. Its a shame

I am amazed at the turn around this school has made. I am a parent who has been with the school for over 10 years with all of my children. I have seen it at its worst but I can not believe the difference in security, discipline, and enviornment. The security issues are gone, the negative attitudes as gone. All you have now is a great principal, mr cusuamao who inspires the teachers to be better and the students are happy in this neighborhood school where the parents feel welcome. Great job Mr Cusumano. Dont think twice about sending your students to this school. It has great plays, great band and culinary arts program.. plus aftershcool activities. The work is challenging also but the teachers make it fun. One of my friends sent her son to cummingham and they hated it and they went to roy mann and they welcomed them with open arms , she felt important and he loves it .

This school has improved a lot. The new principal Mr. Cuosamano has revamped the school. He is passionate, dedicated and determined to see Roy Mann suceed.

Mr. Johnson was the only real administrator that can handle JHS 78. Anyone else that came after him is a joke.

I attend Roy H. Mann now going on to my second year. My 6th grade experience in my opinion was a little confusing because teachers do not have enough time to fully explain the lessons. Then the next day another new lesson begins. The cafeteria and the bathrooms are hardly clean and never have soap. The water fountains do not work and at times there are roaches in them. There are not that many fights anymore since the new principal and dean and parent coordinator are always watching. If more people from the same neighborhood keep coming to this school then maybe it will get better because everyone knows everyone and the parents know each other. I came hear knowing alot of other kids from my elementary school so my first time experience was comfortable. Maybe when I go to 7th grade I will see some new familiar new 6th graders. The teachers do try their best and if everyone cooperates together then this school can be great. The after school and summer programs are fun and keep us busy.

Although the school did not meet all my expectations upon placing my child there, it has offered him many positive experiences and opportunities. The greatest problem we've experienced is the behavior of some children; however the school cannot be held responsible for that. If parents don't raise their children to be functional and respectful members of society, it's not the school's fault. Children like that will misbehave no matter where they are. There is something to be said about the roach population; there are quite a few. However, when we look at what makes a school a school Roy Mann stands along other great schools. Instead, focus on the education, care/concern for the students from all adults, communication with parents, response time for meeting requests from parents, before/after school programs, vacation-time activities, an awesome parent coordinator, a new/amazingly attentive principal, etc, These are the things that count. Roy H Mann has it all and more. Perfect, it's not; however, for these and many other reasons I'm glad my honors child attended and will be graduating from this school.

Roy Mann is a good school. I was skeptical because of a lot of the negative reviews I found on this site but I have found most of them to be groundless. I have a sixth grader at Mann and could not be happier. I find the teachers engaging, communicative and truly concerned about the well being and academic achievement of our children. There are interesting after school programs. The work is challenging and well distributed. I have made unannounced visits to the school and, aside from the normal sounds one would expect inside a middle school building during the day, the halls are quiet. The Principal, deans and school safety staff are always around. The Parent Coordinator is available and very responsive. I have nothing but praise for this school.

Roy mann isn't that bad . I go there. The bathrooms are disguising but that's because of a group of kids. The school needs to focus more on cleaning the school there are sometimes roaches. There weren't any fights this year so far but since I'm in the honor class and in the top of my grade no one really messes with me . As long as you stand up for your self you are fine.they don't need to separate the girls and the boys though.

What an evil, terrible place. These parents should be beyond ashamed and sued and thrown in jail. The kids who start the fights should be in juvie to discover just how 'tough and cool' they are.

This school is horrible, the kids fight every day and litter and destroy the neighborhood. Neighbors are afraid to leave their houses until at least an hour after the kids get out. People who have their smaller children in a park near the school rush toget home before they let the students out. I have had numerous fights in fron of my house by them as well as other neighbors. These kids also harass all the stores in their path as well as ounger children and adults. I have heard other sories but i do not know the situations first hand so I will not comment. The neighborhood has had enough and a lot of us plan to go to the next community meeting to get something done before anyone gets seriously hurt, oops im sorry, someone already has.

In all honesty my experiences in this school were devistating and infuriating. The staff responisbility had been poor and too many fights to count. To be called a 'clean, neatly kept ' school is a complete lie. I am now moved on to another school, and have realized how much of a compliment 'gross ' would be to Roy H Mann

I attended this school years ago, before it became an "educational complex." I was in the "SPE" (special program-enriched) which was supposed to provide enrichment beyond the normal curriculum, but didn't; I recall numerous Spanish teachers in grades 7 and 8, all of whom reviewed/rehashed/retaught stuff we already learned because they didn't know where the last teacher left off--what's "special" about that? I had pretty good teachers as I recall, but the experience was still kinda miserable due to the other students. The main culprits were students from P.S. 236 whose egos could barely fit in the building and who found they could get away with a LOTTA misbehavin' because their parents were deluded into thinking they were such angels at home and should be same at school; a couple of these little darlings ended up at my high school, but got their comeuppance from other students and became social pariahs tyvm. I don't think anyone has had an overwhelmingly pleasant experience in middle school--awkward age, new kids, new academics--but I'm not sure including this school on a website of "greatschools" is appropriate--at least not from what I've read. I was only too glad to leave.

Worst mistake I ever made sending my kids here. I just looked at the state scores for this school and they are horrible. They actually go down the longer students are there, not up.

Roy H. Mann still isn't the BEST school, but since the new Principal arrived people have spent less time roaming the hallways than before when I got here in 6th grade. There are still too many fights, especially afterschool, and also some racial discrimination. I for one think they should spend less time trying to seperate the boys and girls, and spend more time focusing on how they can stop the fighting.Some pros are that if you focus hard enough on academics, you can do better. I was worried in 6th grade that I made the wrong choice, but it got better. Now i moved up to excelsior from cap and i'm going to 8th grade.

this is one of the worst schools my child ever went to out of all of his schooling. The teachers don't care about the students and the students know that so they behave as such. They have no command over their class and allow the students to do whatever they want in the classroom. The children are allowed to fight without anyone interveining. Learning is a strain in this school......this is one of the worst schools on the face of the earth. I hate it and so does my child.

My only child is a student of this school , he's in 7th grade and so far i feel so comfortable with him there ,the teachers are very understanding towards the kids ...yes some kids may get into trouble but you also have to blame the parents to help discipline the children . my son recently loss his father and the teachers ans staff was so kind towards our family .I would recommend this school to my family and friends for our future generations I just love the fact that someone calls if my son get to school a little late or if he feel ill ...Thank you for caring to the staff of ROY H. MANN !
